Nyra's POV
The next morning
“Nyra! Nyra!! Nyra!!!” Cain's voice echoed behind me as I walked through the College hallway towards my lecture hall.
I ignored him because I didn't want to speak to him and again, I was already late for class.
The students were starting to notice that I ignored him, and whispered behind cupped lips. Everyone knew we were the power couple. In fact the ladies won't stop being jealous of me.
His fingers gripped my arms roughly, forcing me to halt. “Can you just f*****g leave me alone!” I snapped, eyes blazing. “What part of I reject you, don't you understand Cain?”
Whispers and murmurs erupted.
Cain cast a wary glance around the hallway, his teeth gritted. “You better keep your voice down, Nyra. You are f*****g embarrassing me.”
Then he managed a fake smile at the students. “Please everyone, don't mind us,” he addressed the students. “My mate is just angry at me over something trivial.”
Of course, he always endeavors to keep up his reputation flawlessly.
“So f*****g another woman is something trivial?” I spat, my words were raw.
The murmurs and whispers rose higher.
“Come here!” He growled, his fingers dug into my wrist as he pulled me away, towards an empty lecture hall.
“Leave me alone!” I fought against him but my strength was nothing compared to his.
“What the f**k was that, Nyra?!” He spat, yanking my hand away. “Did you want to ruin my reputation?”
I let out a humourless laugh. “What? Are you scared that the people would find out that you are not the perfect golden boy.”
He pointed an accusatory finger at me. “You better f*****g shut your damn mouth, Nyra. Or else, I will make you regret it.”
This time, I did not say anything more because he was starting to look dreadful. But I stared at him intensely, trying to deduce if this was the same man that had given me the world… but he doesn't even seem like him at all. Same face, but an entirely different person.
“I want you to meet someone important later, so you better be in your best behaviour. We might have to start discussing our wedding plans.”
“Are you crazy?” I ran a hand through my hair, frustrated to the core. “I told you that I want to reject you and now you are talking about marriage?”
He stepped closer, slung his arms around my waist and stalked his claims there. “And I told you you have no choice, Nyra,” he breathed out on my face. “You are stuck with me for the rest of your life or I will make sure that you lose everything if you dare embarrass me in front of the person.”
I couldn't say a word. I have just a year until graduation and if I lose my studentship, my life would be miserable.
“So, darling.. look as beautiful as you always do,” he said coolly, smirking triumphantly. “I will pick you up by six and be ready to spend the night at my place”
His hand drifted lower and he squeezed my ass roughly. “Let me give you that wild s*x that you’ve always wanted and maybe that would open your eyes to see that we are truly meant to be together.”
With that, he turned and walked away.
My chest heaved with barely restrained rage and a tear slid down my cheeks.
“Ahhhh,” I let out a guttural growl to dispense the anger embedded within.
I hated the fact that I was helpless. No one would save me from Cain. No one. But one thing was for sure… I will give whatever it takes to save myself.
Wiping my tears off, I walked towards the notice board. A lot of final year students were there, checking their project supervisor. I couldn't even get access to the front, until a hand pulled me back.
“Nyra,” Ava—my best friend and dorm mate—called. “I already checked for you. Your project supervisor is—” she suddenly stopped talking, her brows furrowed. “What happened to your eyes? It is swollen.”
I haven't told Ava anything. I went straight to the bar last night after I left Cain's apartment. And when I got back yesternight, she was already asleep.
“I just had some dirt in my eyes,” I lied, because telling her the truth now might ruin everything; Ava is quite troublesome. She might confront Chloe and Cain. “I'm fine.”
She stared at me longer than necessary before eventually nodding. “Alright. So.. your project supervisor is Dr. Thornvale.”
My brows narrowed. “And who is that?”
Her voice dropped into a lower whisper. “He is a new lecturer. People said he is the king of the Northern province.”
The Northern province pack is a big pack, consisting of other small packs including the Blackthorne pack.”
She continued. “He has been doing research abroad for many years and now he is back as a professor. I heard he is so handsome and hot.”
I pinched the bridge between his nose, still wondering how she came to know about all this information. But that was typical of her; she always knew everything.
“But, am I his only student?” I asked.
She nodded. “Yes, you are.”
“Why?!”
“They said he is hard to please, so they gave him the best student that won't stress him too much and that is you.”
I gulped down the lump in my throat, unease churning at my insides.
A strict, hard to please professor.
Goddess… why is everything falling apart for me.
“You better go and see him.” She started pushing towards the professors’ office building. “I heard he is short tempered too. Try not to get on his bad side.”
I waved at her, watching as she turned away. “Alright. Thank you.”
A beat passed before I walked into the building. After I had asked around for his office, I made my way there, each step heavier than the last and my chest pounded loudly.
I let out a shaky breath, raised my trembling hands up and pressed the door bell, the shrill ring of it echoed through the empty hallway.
“Come in,” a deep voice echoed behind the door.
Something about the voice was familiar though.
I twisted the door open, stepped into the tastefully furnished office, but I found it cringe because it was painted in black.
Besides the window, a tall broad shouldered man stood there, dressed in a black suit, hands shoved deep in his pockets; he seemed to love black a lot.
Again, the stance, scent and aura that rolled off him was familiar, but where could I have known the Alpha of the Northern province from.
I gulped down again. “I'm Nyra Maxwell, sir.” My voice was steadier than expected. “Your project student.”
And when he turned…..
My breath seized completely.
