Clyde's POV.
LOS ANGELES,
TWO YEARS AGO.
Looking down at the city of Los Angeles from my office had always been something that brought me some sort of comfort. It constantly reminded me of how inconsequential my worries were.
But, this time around, my worries seemed larger than life. I was in love with Genesis, my Personal Assistant.
The two weeks we had spent in Rome had been the best weeks of my entire life.
But, it had to come to an end today. I couldn't let anyone come too close to me. It broke me that I had to do what I was going to do, but it had to be done.
She was so innocent, and I didn't want to taint her innocence with how broken I was.
I sat in silence behind my desk, unable to concentrate on the document I was reviewing. I tapped the pen in my hand against the table in a rhythm that mirrored how my heart was thumping hard against my chest.
A soft knock sounded on the door. I knew it was her.
“Come in,” I said brusquely, my expression turning brisk and business-like.
“Hi,” she said, stepping into the office, her cheeky smile doing unspeakable things to my insides. I thought I was prepared to see her, prepared to act like I didn't give a damn about her, but at the sight of her, desire raced through my veins, driving me crazy with want. The sound of her voice made me want to hear her moans of pleasure one last time. But I wasn't going to do that to her.
“Hello, Genesis.” I answered, not looking up from the piece of paper I couldn't even concentrate on.
Her smile faltered at my icy demeanor. God, I wanted to cover those lips with mine so badly.
“Um…” she started, the confidence she had entered the room with had dwindled considerably. “Are we still meeting up at your place like we discussed last night, Clyde?”
I took a deep breath, rubbing my temples. I dropped the pen on the table and met her stare, eyeball to eyeball. It had to be done, I reassured myself.
“Miss Simone, I'd like to be addressed and treated as your boss like I am. There's nothing between us, I hope you're not mistaken about that,” I said, maintaining my cold, flat monotone.
Her eyes filled with tears and all I wanted to do was hold her in my arms like the delicate flower that she was, but I couldn't. I had to do this.
“So, it was all just a lie?” she whispered, the tears streaming down her face now.
“I never lied to you, Genesis. What happened between us in Rome was just a fling. Nothing else. I'm surprised you read more to it actually,” I said, raising an eyebrow indifferently.
She opened her mouth to argue, but she couldn't seem to find the right words.
“Miss Simone, I expect every interaction between us, from now on, to be professional. Strictly Boss-Personal Assistant relationship. We wouldn't want people getting the wrong idea about us now, would we?” I asked, refusing to break eye contact with her.
Tears streamed uncontrollably down her face now, but I looked away, acting like I didn't notice. If I looked at her, I knew I'd be tempted to take back everything I had said and tell her exactly how I felt about her.
“Get me the schedule for the building surveys I have today. And a cup of coffee. Close the door behind you,” I said, dismissively.
She left my office, closing the door with a soft click. I guess I didn't know her as well as I thought I did.
I had thought she would slam the door on her way out. At least fight for what we had.
Maybe I was the only one who felt something shift in me during those two weeks of bliss. I reminisced about how perfect she had been.
Utterly responsive to my touch. She had smelled like heaven and tasted even better. And if I listened hard enough in the silence, I could still hear her moans as I slid into her from behind and her panting as she wrapped her legs around my shoulders, holding on to my head while my tongue worked her most intimate parts.
A loud snap made me jerk. I realized I had been gripping the pen in my hand so tightly it had snapped.
Thinking about it wasn't going to make any difference. I had broken her heart and she would never look at me the same again. Never.
Another knock sounded on the door, this time firmer and more deliberate. Maybe she had put it all behind her, sooner than I expected.
“Come in,”
It was my secretary, Evana. She opened the door slightly, peeping into the office. “Miss Ariadne is here to see you, boss,” she announced.
What did she want now? Humiliating me by cheating in public was not enough for her?
“Let her in,” I said. Better to listen to whatever she wants to say than have her cause a scene in the company, which I knew she was perfectly capable of.
She sashayed into the office like she owned the place. Looking at her, I realized why I'd been attracted to her.
Ariadne was drop-dead gorgeous. Her skin glowed with a radiance that seemed almost unreal and her long straight hair flowed perfectly down her exposed back. Her dress stopped just right below her butt, leaving her long, sexy legs on show.
“Hey, baby,” she purred, sauntering round to my side and planting a kiss right on my mouth. She ignored my stunned face and flashed a tempting smile at me. She ignored the chairs in the office to sit on the desk, right in front of me.
She bit her lips slowly, bending forward to give me a clear view of her perky boobs.
“Don't do that, Ariadne,” I chided.
“Why not, baby?” she asked, doing her sick puppy-eye look. She reached out to touch my face. I grabbed her hand and put it back down, firmly.
“Just leave, Ariadne. There's nothing left to talk to you about. Just go,” I said, weariness etched into my voice. I really didn't have the strength to deal with her drama today.
“But I just got here, baby. And I wanna talk. I don't know what else you want me to say. I've told you that picture was from a movie set. Roman and I were kissing as actors. The media is just eager to bring me down, baby. You know I'd never cheat on you,” she whined, pouting like a spoiled child.
“You were on a movie set and there was no camera in sight. I'm not stupid, Ariadne. Leave my office!” I spat. I stood up to put some space between us, as she was being too close for comfort.
She moved swiftly, wrapping her long legs around my waist, pulling my head down to capture my lips with hers. For a moment, I was too stunned to move.
And it was at that moment that the door burst open and Genesis stood right at the door, staring wide-eyed at both of us, her eyes filled with disbelief and pain.
I felt a sharp spasm of pain in my chest as I thought about how the scene she just walked into would look to Genesis.
“Learn to knock, Missy,” Ariadne shot at her, swinging her long legs and getting off the table.
She had a triumphant look on her face and I wondered if she knew what had happened between Genesis and I.
It was already too late to try to salvage anything I had with Genesis. Maybe it was for the best, her walking into Ariadne and I.
“What do you want so late, Miss Simone?” I asked, giving her a hard stare.
Her skin had grown pale, and I wondered if she was actually feeling alright. Concern shot to my face, but I masked it with indifference.
“I-, nothing. I jus- just wanted to apologize for leaving abruptly earlier. I had an emergency. Good night, sir.” She blubbered and bolted from the room, tears in her big beautiful eyes.
“Leave, Ariadne!” I said, pointing at the door, anger rising in my chest at what Ariadne had caused. The look in Genesis' eyes had broken what was left of my heart.
“But–”
“No buts! Get out!” I thundered.
She grabbed her bag, smoothened her hair and sashayed out of the office, stopping to blow me a kiss at the door before she clicked it shut. She really was unbelievable.
