Shadows of the past

The streets of the city pulsed with the usual rhythm of life cars honking, vendors calling out their wares, and pedestrians weaving in and out of the bustling sidewalks. Yet for Ethan Blackwood, the world felt strangely muted. He sat in the back of his sleek Audi, staring out the tinted window as the driver maneuvered through the congested market district. His thoughts weren’t on the meeting waiting for him downtown, nor on the pile of contracts his assistant had begged him to review. His thoughts were on her.Amara Wells. The girl he’d almost run over. The memory replayed in his mind like a reel on loop the worn blue dress, the basket clutched tightly in her hands, the look of pure shock in her wide eyes when she turned and saw the car. And then the moment recognition had flickered between them. Ethan had recognized her instantly, even though she wasn’t the child from his memories anymore. She was a woman now. A woman with quiet strength in her posture, yet humility in her threadbare clothes. It unsettled him. For years, he had tucked Amara into the furthest corners of his mind, labeling her as a childhood whim, a promise that didn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things. After all, life has taught him harsh lessons. Promises were fragile. Dreams even more so. What mattered was money, power, alliances. Not silly vows spoken beneath the stars.Yet here she was again. Fate had a cruel sense of humor. *** Amara, meanwhile, walked briskly through the crowded market, her basket of groceries bumping against her hip. Her hands still trembled faintly, though she tried to steady them by clutching the handle tighter. She had almost been hit by him. Of all the people in the sprawling city, why did it have to be Ethan Blackwood behind that wheel? She shook her head, trying to chase away the storm of emotions. Anger. Hurt. And underneath it all, something she didn’t want to name. Something dangerously close to longing. It had been years since she had last seen him, yet time hadn’t dulled the memory of his betrayal. She remembered it vividly: the moment he’d stood before her, cold and proud, telling her she wasn’t enough. That her love, her loyalty, her existence couldn’t measure up to the glossy standards of his world. She had been shattered, left to pick up the pieces of her heart while he walked away into a future paved with power and prestige. So why had her chest tightened when she saw him today? Why did part of her still ache at the sight of his face? "I think I am still in love with her,"Evan said to himself."I really need to see her and talk to her,I can't continue like this though I know she would refuse to my offer, I have to think of something else." He said as he rose from his chair to the window. “Amara!”A familiar voice pulled her from her thoughts. It was Miriam, her coworker at the little publishing house where Amara worked as an assistant. Miriam’s auburn hair was pinned into a loose bun, and her smile carried warmth as she approached with a bag of vegetables in her hands. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Miriam said, nudging her playfully. Amara forced a small laugh. “Something like that.” “Well, I hope the ghost isn’t haunting you too badly. Come on, let’s walk together.” As they made their way through the market, Miriam chatted about the new manuscript they were reviewing at work, about the upcoming staff luncheon, about trivial things that usually made Amara smile. But today, her thoughts kept drifting. Every time a sleek black car passed, she found herself tensing, afraid it was him again. "Why am i still thinking about him,Why can't my mind just let him go? Why is my heart in so much pain for someone who doesn't even care about me?Amara had slot of questions in her mind. Miriam noticed. “You’re quiet. Really quiet. What’s going on?” Amara hesitated, then exhaled. “I saw someone I used to know.” “Someone… good?” Miriam tilted her head curiously. Amara’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Not exactly.” *** Across town, Ethan sat in his office, staring at the skyline through the floor ,to-ceiling windows. Blackwood Enterprises towered above the city, its glass facade gleaming with the reflection of success. To anyone else, it was the picture of achievement. To Ethan, it felt like a gilded cage. His assistant, Daniel, entered the room carrying a stack of documents. “Sir, these need your signature before the board meeting tomorrow.” Ethan barely glanced at them. “Leave them on the desk.” Daniel hesitated. “Is everything all right? You seem… distracted.” Ethan’s jaw tightened. “I’m fine.” ''Sir with all dew respect i want you to know if there is something disturbing you, just know i am here to listen to you." He said as he walked away. But he wasn’t. He couldn’t erase Amara’s face from his mind. The way her eyes were still so full of life despite everything had looked at him. He remembered those eyes from childhood, wide with wonder as they lay on the grass and counted stars. He remembered the sound of her laughter, the way she believed in him even when he didn’t believe in himself. And then he remembered the day he broke her. His parents’ voices still echoed in his head, sharp and unyielding.“You cannot waste your life on someone beneath your station, Ethan. Do you understand? You’re a Blackwood. Your marriage must bring power and prestige. Not poverty.” He obeyed them. Or at least, he had convinced himself he was obeying reason. He told himself Amara would only hold him back. That she deserved better than being dragged into a life where she didn’t belong. But deep down, he knew the truth. He had been a coward. And seeing her again brought all of that crashing back. *** That evening, Amara sat by the window of her small apartment, staring out at the dimly lit street below. The walls were thin, the furniture worn, but it was hers. She and her mother had worked tirelessly to build this little life, and she was proud of it. Proud of how far she’d come without anyone’s hand to guide her. But her heart wasn’t calm. She traced the rim of the teacup in her hands, her mind returning to Ethan again and again. She hated that he still had the power to make her feel anything at all. When she was a girl, she believed his promise. She had clung to it during the hardest days, whispering to herself that one day, her world would change. That one day, she would be chosen. But that promise had crumbled into dust, leaving behind only scars. And now, here he was again. Back in her life, even if only by accident. Amara closed her eyes and whispered into the quiet room, “I won’t let you break me again, Ethan Blackwood.”Yet even as the words left her lips, her heart betrayed her. Because deep down, she knew the story between them wasn’t over. Not yet. *** Ethan lay awake in his penthouse, the city lights glowing faintly through the glass walls. He had everything, wealth, power, influence. But tonight, none of it mattered. All he could see was Amara, standing in the middle of the road, clutching her basket as though it was her shield. And for the first time in years, he wondered if perhaps the one thing he had discarded so easily… was the only thing he truly needed. "I don't know why I can't stop thinking about you Amara,I just feel like I want to be in your arms again and feel your touch," He said as sleep took over him
