Chapter Five I eventually grabbed a lift on a fifth division supply lorry that was crossing the Moselle to the south and then the La Seille at Moyenvic. He dropped me off just south of Metz where I could clearly see and hear hell being let loose. He also tossed me a small bag with a couple day’s supplies. I ate half on the walk up to the line. I quite expected to be told to go home, but instead I was approached by a colonel of the twenty sixth division asking me who I was. I replied. ‘Maquis.’ He nodded at the Mauser and said. ‘Can you use that?’ I said with confidence. ‘Oui.’ He beckoned. ‘Come with me.’ Whereby he led me to a small copse about half a mile away. Under the cover of the trees he pointed to a German position across the valley. ‘Now that is about nine hundred metres. O
