Chapter 10
Abruzzo
The Abrassi estate was quiet, the kind of quiet that made the world feel suspended. Elizabeth walked through the courtyard with purpose, not to escape, not to think, but because she felt him.
Her wolf, Elana, wasn’t restless tonight.
She was expectant.
He’s here, Elana whispered, not with urgency, but with certainty.
Elizabeth’s heart tightened. For almost two years, she had lived with a constant ache, a hollow space inside her chest that no training, no discipline, no Scottish wind could fill. She had ignored the pull once, but she had never escaped it. Her mind, her body, her wolf… all of them had been waiting.
And now, finally, she wasn’t running.
She reached the edge of the courtyard just as a familiar scent drifted toward her, warm, clean, sharp, unmistakably his. Her breath caught.
Michael Barrington stepped into view.
He didn’t look surprised. He looked relieved.
As if he had been waiting for her too.
He walked toward her, slow, controlled, but his eyes… his eyes held the same longing she had carried for two years.
“Elizabeth,” he said softly.
Her name wasn’t a question. It was recognition.
She didn’t hesitate. She stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the warmth of his presence.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” she said quietly.
Michael exhaled, the sound almost a release. “I’ve been searching for you since the night you left.”
“I know,” she whispered. “I felt it.”
He reached out, brushing his fingers along her cheek. The touch wasn’t tentative, it was reverent, familiar, like he had imagined it a thousand times.
Elizabeth leaned into his hand, her eyes closing for a moment. “I’m not running anymore.”
Michael’s expression softened, something warm and grateful flickering across his face. “I didn’t want to push you. I didn’t want to overwhelm you.”
“You’re not,” she said. “I want this. I want you.”
His breath caught.
Elana surged forward, not with confusion, but with joy, a deep, resonant joy that made Elizabeth’s chest tightens.
Michael stepped closer, his forehead resting gently against hers. “I’ve missed you,” he murmured.
Elizabeth’s voice trembled. “I’ve missed you too. Every day.”
He swallowed, his hands settling lightly at her waist. “Marcella prepared the mates’ quarters.”
“I know,” she said. “She told me.”
“And you’re… comfortable with that?”
Elizabeth met his gaze fully. “I want to be with you. I want to stay with you.”
Michael’s eyes softened, amber flickering. “Elizabeth…”
She placed her hand over his heart. “I’ve spent two years wanting you. Two years feeling incomplete. Two years wishing I hadn’t walked away that night.”
He covered her hand with his own, holding it firmly. “You didn’t walk away from me. You walked toward safety.”
“And now I’m walking toward you.”
Michael’s breath shook, but his voice stayed steady. “I want to be close to you. I want to know you. I want to understand everything you’ve carried.”
“You will,” she said. “I’m ready.”
He pulled her gently into his arms, holding her with a tenderness that made her eyes burn. It wasn’t possessive. It wasn’t demanding. It was simply… home.
Elizabeth rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. Elana settled inside her, peaceful for the first time in years.
Michael whispered into her hair, “I won’t rush you.”
“I know,” she said. “But you don’t have to hold back either.”
He froze for a moment, then exhaled slowly, his arms tightening around her just slightly.
“Come with me,” he said softly. “Walk with me.”
Elizabeth nodded.
They walked through the quiet gardens, side by side, their hands brushing, their wolves humming in quiet harmony. The night didn’t feel heavy anymore. It felt like a beginning.
A beginning she had been waiting for.
A beginning he had been longing for.
A beginning neither of them would run from again.
The Abrassi gardens were quiet, but Elizabeth felt no tension in the silence. Not tonight. Not with Michael beside her. For the first time in two years, the ache in her chest was gone. The hollow space was filled. Her wolf was calm. Her mind was steady.
Michael walked beside her, their hands brushing lightly, but even that small contact sent warmth through her entire body. It wasn’t new, she had felt it since the night she met him, but now she didn’t fight it. She welcomed it.
They reached a secluded corner of the garden, where the moonlight spilled across the stone bench. Michael sat first, then gently pulled her down beside him. She didn’t hesitate. She leaned into him, her head resting against his shoulder, his arm wrapping around her waist with quiet certainty.
For a moment, they simply breathed together.
Then Michael spoke, his voice low. “Elizabeth… I need to tell you something.”
She didn’t tense. She didn’t fear. She simply turned her face toward him, her hand resting over his heart. “Tell me.”
He exhaled slowly. “The rogue activity… it’s worse than anyone knows.”
Elizabeth nodded. “I know.”
Michael blinked. “You know?”
She lifted her head slightly, meeting his gaze. “Elana feels it. She’s been feeling it for months. The tension in the air. The shift in the magic. The way the land reacts. Scotland felt it first.”
Michael’s eyes softened with understanding. “Your wolf is connected to something ancient.”
“She’s connected to everything,” Elizabeth whispered. “She feels the imbalance. The danger. The wrongness.”
Michael tightened his arm around her. “Then we tell each other everything. No secrets. No fear. No holding back.”
Elizabeth nodded. “We already do.”
He smiled faintly. “I know. But I want to say it out loud.”
She leaned closer, her forehead brushing his. “Then say it.”
Michael’s voice dropped to a whisper. “You are my mate. My equal. My partner. My other half. I want you to know everything I know. I want you to carry nothing alone.”
Elizabeth’s breath trembled. “I want the same.”
He cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing her skin. “The rogues aren’t acting alone. Someone is directing them. Coordinating them. And my father thinks it’s connected to the magical interference we faced three years ago.”
Elizabeth swallowed. “Liam.”
Michael’s jaw tightened. “Yes.”
Elizabeth didn’t flinch. “He killed my father.”
Michael’s eyes darkened, amber flashing. “I know.”
She placed her hand over his. “I want to face this with you.”
“You will,” he said. “We will face everything together.”
Elizabeth’s voice softened. “Michael… I’m not afraid.”
He exhaled, relief washing over his features. “I know. That’s what scares me.”
She smiled gently. “Elana doesn’t fear danger. She was born for it.”
“And I was born for you,” he murmured.
Her heart tightened, warm and full.
She shifted closer, her body pressing against his, her hand sliding up to his jaw. “Michael… I want to be close to you.”
His breath caught. “Elizabeth…”
“I’ve waited two years,” she whispered. “I’ve wanted you for two years. I’m ready.”
Michael’s eyes softened, his wolf pushing forward, amber glowing. “I want you too. More than you know.”
She leaned in, her lips brushing his lightly, not a kiss, not yet, but a promise.
Michael’s hand slid to the back of her neck, gentle, steady, reverent. “Come with me,” he whispered. “To the quarters Marcella prepared.”
Elizabeth nodded. “Yes.”
He stood, offering his hand. She took it without hesitation.
Their wolves hummed together, a single pulse.
A single rhythm.
A single bond.
They walked through the quiet corridors of the Abrassi estate, their hands intertwined, their hearts steady, their minds open to each other. There was no fear. No doubt. No hesitation.
Only completeness.
Only destiny.
Only them.
