Chapter Ten — The Battle for Nocturne

449 Words
The ground shook violently as the palace walls trembled under a massive impact. Dust rained down from the vaulted ceilings, and the screams of panicking guards echoed from the courtyards below. "They've breached the outer bailey!" Prince Darius shouted, bursting back into the throne room with his sword drawn. "There are too many—rogues, shadow-warriors, and beasts we've never seen before!" Kael didn't hesitate. He shifted instantly, his massive, powerful wolf form surging forward with a fierce growl that rattled the stained-glass windows. He looked back at me, his eyes gleaming with fierce devotion. Stay behind me, his voice echoed directly in my mind through our bond. "No," I said aloud, stepping forward as the silver markings across my skin blazed with blinding intensity. "I'm done hiding behind everyone else." My mother, Elena, stepped beside me, her own hands erupting in a brilliant aura of lunar energy. "Then let's show them what the Blood Moon really means," she whispered, a fierce smile touching her lips. Together, we charged toward the shattered front gates. The courtyard was a nightmare of fire, steel, and snarling beasts. Shadows twisted and bled into the darkness, and at the center of the chaos stood a towering figure draped in midnight-black armor. The Dark King. He turned his head slowly, his crimson eyes locking onto mine through the smoke and ash. "At last," the Dark King boomed, his voice cutting through the roars of the battle. "The little wolf without a pack has finally come to surrender her throne." "I'm not here to surrender," I called out, raising my hand as the ancient silver crown materialized above me, floating in a halo of pure starlight. "I'm here to end you." With a wave of my hand, a shockwave of silver energy rippled across the courtyard. Hundreds of shadow-warriors froze, their weapons dropping from their hands as the ancient power of the Blood Moon washed over them, stripping away the Dark King's control and forcing them to their knees. The Dark King roared in fury, charging directly toward me. Before he could take three steps, Kael intercepted him, slamming into the dark monarch with the force of an avalanche. Beside him, my father and Prince Darius rushed into the fray, fighting side-by-side to clear a path. I raised both hands, drawing upon the centuries of strength sleeping in my blood. The silver light enveloped me completely, turning the dark night into day. This was my choice. This was my pack, my kingdom, and my destiny. As the Dark King screamed under the weight of the lunar fire, I stepped forward to claim the victory. The war for our bloodline was finally coming to an end.
