Jaden Pov
"It's been five days. Are you going to tell me or not?" James asked, breaking me out of my stupor..
"It's none of you --"
"You can't keep saying, it's none of my business everytime I ask." He cut me off, giving a glare. "Everything is my business. Especially when it comes to you. You are my brother goddammit. I know you have been watching those girls. Are you going to tell me why? Is it because they asked for our help, or because you are more interested in fooling around with them? I remembered you clearly telling me it's not that serious."
I'm in my office packing up for the day. It's only been four o'clock, James is chastising me and I can't take it anymore. I closed all the tabs on my laptop, except the one where I can watch the apartment where Katherine lives. I installed CCTV cameras just to make sure she's safe. Not that she knows I'm watching her. I haven't spoken to her since that first night. But everyday since then, I have been part of her life in many ways than she could realise.
I digged for some information and got to know about how William runs s*x racket in the city. How did I not know about this? For this very reason, I knew I had to keep a close eye on Katherine and her sister.
I let out a deep sigh and sat down on my chair, leaning back. James is my brother but he's a pain in the ass. There's nothing I have ever kept from him. But this secret is causing some rift between us and I don't like it.
"I'm trying to help them." I finally admitted, looking away from him. I don't want to share these things with anyone especially when it comes to Katherine.
"She's the reason we bought that building, right?" he asked me, I nodded in response. "Does she know about this?"
After a long pause, I looked back at him and decided to spill the truth.
"She saw us killing Geo's Assassin. So I'm just making sure she doesn't tell anyone. Not that I'm afraid." I half smiled.
"You let a witness walk away alive?" James' voice was a mix of shock and amusement.
"I took care of it," I said defensively, I stood up and went to clear papers on the desk and walked towards the door to leave. I don't have to explain myself to anyone, not even my brother.
"JADEN"
"JAMES" I snap back.
"Is this going to be a problem for us?" He asked with concern in his voice.
"Have I ever put us in any trouble? Have I not taken care of our business.?" Heat rises up my neck as anger takes over me. I walked around the desk to get face to face with him. "Have you once in your life ever known me to not cover my s**t and caused us trouble? Have I not thought about what's best for everyone in the family?"
He clenched his jaw and looked away. James might be smart but he still needs to learn. He's a small cat until you get into his space. Once you disturb him, that's when a real panther comes out of him and he'll rip your throat out. We grew up together and made it this far together. No one can come between us. But I just needed to remind him that I'm the big brother, the boss who makes decisions.
"You're right brother. I'm sorry, I'm just worried about you." he finally said and reached out to put a hand on my shoulder. "Just be careful. I know I always joke around messing with you about finding women. But I haven't seen you like this before." Is there anything I can help you with?" He said, smiling with a glint in his eyes.
"I know, I will be careful. I will let you know if I need any kind of help." And it goes a long way to cool both of us down. I pulled him into a quick hug and then stepped back. I grabbed my bag and we left the office together.
We entered the garage, "I'll see you tomorrow morning. Don’t be late." I said, James nodded, we said our goodbyes and parted ways. James sat in his Maserati and drove off. He has his own penthouse where he lives peacefully, while I live at our old house mansion. I like vintage stuff, I guess that’s why I am still living where I am. I slipped into my black Rolls Royce and motioned for the driver to take me home.
While in the car, my thoughts went to Katherine. It's been hell these five days, keeping my distance, but I kept promising myself that I will make my move soon. I also needed to make sure she didn’t run to the cops. It was a real possibility, although I knew she wouldn’t. I made my threat very clear to her. I needed to find out about her family history, her friends and everything there is to know about her life. Only to find out there isn't much about her background, she came to Chicago three months prior, and the only surviving family member is her sister. She used to live with an old lady who was her nanny who died a few months back. I had put a few of my men in and around the place where she lives and works to watch and listen and they report to me everyday about her activities, and so far, there’s been nothing. She’s kept her silence, and for her loyalty I think I will reward her. That thought made me smile.
After the night we parted ways, I bought the building where she lives currently, the next day and secretly had a few upgrades done. I had cameras installed, and security guards placed at all the entrances. I sent some of the guys to be on the lookout for her, but I didn’t mention her name. I hate that dump yard she calls her home.
I also went in to check where she works. I didn't go into her library. I knew she would be terrified seeing me. So I kept my distance and watched her from outside. She kept mostly to herself working her ass off everyday to make some money. I noticed she didn't take any sort of transportation back home just to save a few bucks. It aches me to watch her struggle everyday.
At the end of every night from the last five days, I waited outside her building until I watched her light go out. After that, I head home and think about her until I fall asleep. I can’t hold back much longer, and each day that has passed, I have become less and less patient.
