Chapter 9

Katherine POV "Remember Amy, take only those items which are on the list which I have prepared. We are on a budget." I said in a stern voice.       "Yes Katherine, you are telling me this for like a hundredth time." She retorted.          It's Sunday and we are currently in the ice-cream section at Mariano's supermarket purchasing household stuff.  "Well this ice-cream is not on the grocery list." I told her while taking Ben & Jerry's strawberry cheesecake tub from her hand and putting it back on the pile.          "I get it but I'm buying it for you. I can see, you are a little sad about Rose leaving for college, you miss her. Don't you? What’s better than eating Ice Cream to heal a hurting heart! Plus your birthday is coming up in a few days." She replied excitedly, clapping her hands.       "Ames, I know what you're trying to do. My birthday is not until two months and yeah I do miss Rose, but stop acting like I've been through a breakup for God's sake. My heart is perfectly fine and it does not need healing. So don't buy ice cream, put it back." I replied back, crossing my arms over my chest. I have been missing her everyday since she left. It's been a week since Rose left. I miss her so much.         "I am aware that I have always been hard on you. But it’s just because I need you to be more responsible and act maturely. I won't always be there to help you Ames." I said softly looking at her dejected face.        "Yeah it’s true and that's the thing I admire most about you, you always took care of us in good times as well as in hard times. I know I'm bratty sometimes and just joke around all day. I don't take responsibility for my actions and do things without thinking about the consequences. I'm really glad you are my sister and I can lean on you. I will always be in debt for what you have done for us. I'm sorry for giving you a hard time" She came forward to give me a hug. Tears threatened to spill my eyes while hugging her back.         "Come on now we need to get going," I said, pulling back.         "So we are buying this right, please just buy this one. I promise I won't ask anything else." She's a twenty year old woman, yet sometimes acts like a five year old girl. "Fine, but we are taking Chocolate Fudge Brownie Flavour." I said while sticking my tongue out.        "OMG yes!," she replied excitedly.       Getting milk and cereal didn't take too long, and before I knew it, we were standing in front of the counter, waiting to pay for our items. The cashier quickly checked out our items and within a couple of minutes, we were walking out of the grocery store with two big brown bags in our hands.          It's been over a week, and nothing has happened. It feels like whatever happened that night was some kind of a nightmare. I knew he would give me protection until and unless I don't open my mouth and tell anybody and that's exactly what I did. I know I'm trying to make myself feel better by thinking that there's no more threat to us now. We are safe. I'm smarter than that though. I'm always paranoid everytime I leave my house for work. There's always this weird feeling I get that someone is watching me.          I am still trying to find a decent house that fits into my budget. I haven't had any luck till now. Maybe I can take another job at the restaurant where Amelia has started working. I can do a night shift over there. I'm more than happy that she stood up and tried to help me with finances.           "We are here", Amelia's words registered in my brain, breaking my train of thoughts. We quickly paid the cab driver and started walking towards our building. While at the door of our building, I noticed the security is not at his usual spot by the door where they should be. It's been a week since security was appointed, and I was more than happy about it. I didn't expect Big Bull, the owner of the building, who was also my landlord to keep security but I was glad he thought of doing that. The neighborhood we live in is quite shady. Keeping security doesn't make him a good guy though, he is still an asshole and a big womanizer, who brings different women to his home every single day. Gross.        We reached our floor only to see our hallway crowded. What the hell is happening out here? One of the two security guards was talking to someone on his phone. Another security guard was talking, more like threatening Big Bull who was standing half naked at his doorway.        It was then I noticed our apartment door was wide open. I quickly went inside to investigate. A loud scream penetrated my ears. Only to realise it was me who screamed. Groceries bags dropped on the floor with a loud thud. I was completely shocked and frozen in my place. My house has been destroyed, everything was upside down. Someone ransacked our house while we were away. We had been robbed. As if I felt all energy draining from my body, I fell onto the ground.           I must have gone pale, because Amelia started shaking me to bring me back to the present.         "Hey, hey, it's okay, we will file a complaint about it. Don't worry Kat. We will find out the culprits." Amelia assured me while rubbing my shoulders. I used her shoulder for some support and started sobbing loudly. I cannot take this anymore. I wish whoever is behind us will kill me already.     ~•~•~•~
