Chapter 8: First day at the office

1540 Words
Liam walks into his office and takes his seat in his executive chair. He swivels the seat sideways, staring at his office. Smiling, he rolls up his sleeves to start his new day in the office. He leans forward on his desk and switches on his computer to check the company's records, waiting for the computer to boot. Liam counts the time as he waits for the computer to finish booting. Just then, his secretary knocks, and he responds, "Come in." Margret walks into his office holding a file, and she smiles faintly at him, staring downward a little. "Yes... what's your name again?" Liam asks her as he stares at her pretty face. "Margret Jonathan," she says with a smile. "Okay, Miss Margret, what do you want, or how can I help you?" Liam asks, and she steps forward. "Sir, Mr. John Patrick brought this file this morning, and he said I should hand it over to you," she replies, looking at him. "Okay, come drop it here." Liam points to the side of his desk that has empty space with only a few files there, and she steps forward to drop it. Margret is a light-skinned beauty, and a little chubby. She's also very tall and elegantly dressed in her loose suit, compared to the tight short blue suit she wore the previous day. Dropping the file on his desk, Margret steps backward and gaze at Liam. "Anything else?" Liam asks her, as he looks at her face. "Nothing else, boss," she smiles faintly and stares downwards again. "Good. You can leave," Liam dismisses her and starts typing on his computer as it has already switched on. Margret leaves Liam's office, still smiling as she steps out to join the rest of her colleagues working on the third floor. They're all divided by a transparent glass wall, allowing a view of the next person's office and table, as well as the clients the person is attending to. Well, except for the boss's office, which is built separately with closed doors and walls. Liam continues with his office work, forgetting to check the file Miss Margret brought him in the morning until it's time for lunch. As he stands up to leave his office and goes to the company's cafeteria downstairs, having been busy since morning checking many records and new supplies, he sees the file and sighs, realizing he hasn't checked it yet. Liam remembers Mr. John Patrick is the same man his father had spoken to him about, courting him with the man's daughter. His brows furrow as he already knows what's in the file. Liam isn't responsible for hiring new staff, as there's a separate department responsible for that in their firm. Sighing, Liam decides to go out for lunch first, and when he returns, he will check the file and hand it back to the department responsible for hiring new staff. He walks down to the second floor where the cafeteria is, and some of the female staff have frowns on their faces as they spot him approaching. They know Liam is the one who implemented the new rule of not wearing tight outfits or short clothing, but instead oversized and loose attire to work. Liam is less concerned about their looks or frowns, and he walks to take his seat. They only have one hour for break. Liam has already spent a few minutes staring around in his office before he finally steps out for lunch. Taking his seat, the waiter comes up to take his order. "Just fried rice and chicken," Liam responds, picking the menu he wants. He meets the intense gaze of Margret Jonathan on him, and he shifts his gaze away from her. The waiter returns with his request and serves it on his table. Liam starts eating, and after his lunch, he walks back to his office to continue with his work. *** Meanwhile, Margret has already fallen in love with Liam since the first day he arrived at the company when his father introduced her to him on the fifth floor in his father's office. Margret is very happy she's not in any serious relationship and wishes Liam would just ask her out to be his woman instead. He's dark, tall, and muscular, fitting her type, as she loves dark-skinned men in particular. Likewise, Liam is not just any dark-skinned man; he's the CEO and the new general overall manager of the BENSON GROUP. Margret smiles, hoping Liam will notice her and ask her out. She isn't bothered that he asked the female staff to wear oversized clothes—in fact, she's more than happy with that, so her colleagues won't seduce him before her, as some of them still go into his office for other requests, since they work in different sectors managing the company's affairs. Margret sighs as she quickly finishes her lunch. She's a 27-year-old lady and she heard Liam is 30 years of age, and the only child of his parents. "What a perfect match," Margret thinks, knowing Liam's mother is a peaceful, God-fearing woman. Unlike some troublesome mother-in-laws she may have to worry about. Finishing her lunch, Margret is dining with a male colleague from the production team, Christopher Edmond, who is also in a higher position due to his dedication and diligence in carrying out his office duties. Christopher is a light-skinned man and is asking Margret to be his girlfriend. Margret sits with Christopher having her lunch, but her mind is totally on the CEO, as Christopher is just another worker like her, while the CEO is the main owner. Although Christopher is two years older than the CEO—about to turn 32—Margret doesn't like him that much. "Done with my lunch, I have to go now. You know the CEO is still new, and I'm still his secretary," Margret says to Christopher, as she stands up from her seat. "I know, Margret, but you aren't his personal assistant. Besides, the CEO is very hardworking, so I doubt he really needs much of your presence around him,” Christopher responds. "You’re only saying that because you’re not on the third floor with us. If you were on the third floor, you would know how serious and smartly we work sitting there beside the boss's office. I have to go now," Margret replies to him coldly, and he gulps. "Wait, Margret! I'm not stopping you from leaving either. Besides, I have to go back to the fourth floor too now, but how about my proposal to you? You haven't given me a response yet?" Christopher asks her, and she frowns. "I know, Chris, but I'm still thinking about it," Margret replies, biting her lower lip. Christopher likes how Margret calls him Chris and bites her lower lip too. "So what do you say? I've been asking you for your contact number and you don't want to give it to me. You know I can’t ask any of your colleagues, please just give me your phone number, and I will call you tonight." "Chris..." Margret hums his name, and just then they hear the sound of the buzzer indicating that lunch is over. "I'm sorry, Chris, but I have to go now. Probably some other time," Margret says, leaving Christopher speechless, as she immediately walks out from their table of two and quickly makes her way out of the cafeteria. She walks upstairs using the stairs, as many staff are also exiting the cafeteria and returning to their working positions in the large five-story building company, which is very spacious. Margret steps onto the third floor, and walks over to her glass office to take her seat. "What took you so long to arrive?" Bambam Davis, one of Margret's colleagues on the third floor, asks her. As she makes her way towards her office seat. "Nothing; didn't you just hear the buzzer? It rang to indicate lunch is over," Margret replies coldly, not liking Bambam, the dark-skinned beauty in front of her. "Really? Then tell that to the boss when you see him. He called your line just now and you didn’t pick it up," Bambam retorts coldly. "He did? Why didn’t you just say that instead of wasting my time and asking me silly questions? Have you gone to answer him? Did you pick my call?" Margret questions, but Bambam scoffs. "No... Why should I?" Bambam crosses her arms around her chest and stares at Margret coldly. The supervisor on the third floor steps out, his job is to monitor the staff and see if they're in their usual working positions. "What are you two chatting about?" the head supervisor, Mr. Mavin Newton, asks. "Nothing, sir," Bambam quickly responds, as she walks back to her own office that's across to Margret's. Margret continues to glare at Bambam coldly. As Bambam is a hot seductress. Margret hates Bambam and sees her as a threat, since Bambam also has an interest in the new CEO. Biting her lower lip angrily, Margret continues to stare at Bambam coldly, who sits and smirks at her. "Argh!" Margret grits her teeth. Just then, her office line rings, startling her, and she immediately picks up.
