Her alarm had failed to ring, her phone battery was almost dead, and she had exactly fifteen minutes to get to work. “Not today,” she whispered as she ran down the street. She was carrying a cup of hot coffee in one hand and her bag in the other. Her shoes hurt. Her hair was a mess. And she was already late. Then everything went wrong. She turned the corner too quickly and crashed into someone. The coffee flew from her hand. It splashed directly onto a man's expensive black suit. Silence. Amelia slowly looked up. The man standing in front of her was tall, handsome, and frighteningly calm. His dark eyes stared at the stain on his suit. Then they moved to her face. “You just ruined my suit.” Amelia's heart began racing. “I—I’m sorry.” “Sorry?” “Yes. It was an accident.” He looked at his watch. “Do you have any idea how much this suit costs?” She looked at the stain. “No.” “More than you probably earn in a month.” Amelia's embarrassment immediately turned into irritation. “Well, maybe you shouldn't stand in the middle of the sidewalk.” The man's eyebrows lifted. “Excuse me?” “You heard me.” For the first time, he almost smiled. “You're brave.” “I'm late.” “And that's my problem?” “No.” She picked up her bag. “Goodbye.” She started walking away. “Wait.” Amelia stopped. The man walked toward her. “What is your name?” She turned around. “Why?” “So I know who ruined my suit.” “Amelia.” “Amelia what?” “Carter.” He repeated her name quietly. “Amelia Carter.” Before she could ask why he was interested, a black luxury car stopped beside them. A driver stepped out. “Mr. Hayes, we need to leave.” Amelia froze. Mr. Hayes. She knew that name. Everyone did. Alexander Hayes. The youngest billionaire in the city. CEO of Hayes International. A man who rarely appeared in public. Amelia stared at him. “You're Alexander Hayes?” He looked at her. “Yes.” Her face went pale. “Oh.” “What?” “I just told a billionaire to get out of my way.” His lips curved into a small smile. “You did.” “I should probably apologize again.” “That would be wise.” She took a breath. “I'm extremely sorry, Mr. Hayes.” He stepped closer. “Alexander.” “What?” “Call me Alexander.” Amelia didn't know what to say. He opened the car door. Before getting inside, he looked back at her. “I'll see you again, Amelia.” She frowned. “I don't think so.” His smile returned. “I'm sure you don't.” The car drove away. Amelia stood on the sidewalk, completely confused. She had no idea that the man she had just met would soon change her life. --- That evening, Amelia arrived at the hotel where she worked. Her manager immediately called her into his office. “Amelia, sit down.” She became nervous. “Am I being fired?” “No.” He pushed a folder toward her. “You've been selected for a temporary executive assistant position.” Amelia opened the folder. Her eyes widened. The salary was enormous. “Who requested me?” Her manager looked uncomfortable. “Hayes International.” Her heart stopped. “No.” “Yes.” “Mr. Hayes?” “Yes.” Amelia closed the folder. “I can't work for him.” “Why not?” “Because I spilled coffee on him this morning.” Her manager stared at her. “You did what?” Amelia sighed. “It's a long story.” He smiled. “Well, apparently, Mr. Hayes didn't care about the coffee.” “What does he care about?” Her manager looked at her. “You.” Amelia's heart began beating faster. And somewhere across the city, Alexander Hayes was looking at a photograph of her. He whispered to himself, “Amelia Carter…” Then he smiled. “This is going to be interesting.”
