Chapter 22 I spent the morning in my room until I heard Jake and Rachel leave around noon. Mom came in shortly after Jake’s truck pulled out of the driveway. She didn’t knock, telling me she meant serious business. “Alright, what happened? Rachel came downstairs crying her eyes out.” She put her hands on her hips. “And your brother was so mad he was ready to come up here and drag you out.” I tossed Jane Eyre to the floor. I’d read the same page three times, so clearly I wasn’t concentrating anyway. I’d heard Rachel crying when she and Jake walked past my room. She had gone to his room after I’d thrown her out.
