Prologue How had I ever let it come to this? I pulled the necklace from my pocket and ran my thumb over the surface of the pendant, circling the center stone and pressing hard enough to feel the prongs nip. The burn told me I’d succeeded in slicing into skin. Squeezing my finger against the cut, I watched my blood drip onto each leaf of the clover’s design, the bright scarlet running over the stone’s facets and pooling in the creases of the leaves. I smeared the essence of my very life till the silver surface was nearly covered. It had all started with my blood and this necklace, and now I would end it.
