Chapter 3 “What is going on?” Mom’s voice made me spin around and my heart pound even harder. I grabbed her arm and dragged her to the door to watch Jake trying to calm Cain, who was still barking and lunging toward me. “The dumb dog lost it! He tried to attack me!” “What? That doesn’t sound like him. What did you do to him?” She glanced between me and the dog, now panting on the other side of the glass as Jake rubbed his ears. “Why does everyone assume I did something? Jake said the same thing. He just went nuts! He barked and barked, then when I touched Jake he flipped! If Jake hadn’t been standing there, he’d have killed me.” Mom’s lips flattened as her brows dipped. “You’re exaggerating, Miriam. Cain would never attack you.” “Mom, he hates me, always has! Now it’s just official.”
