THE ALPHA'S CHOICE

433 Words
The silence that followed his words was deafening. Hundreds of eyes burned into my back as Alpha Kael held my hand. I couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think past the one terrifying truth clawing through my mind. He felt it. He felt my wolf. No one had ever sensed it before. Not the elders. Not the pack. Not even the wolves who trained beside me growing up. But Alpha Kael had touched my skin once… And everything inside me had exploded. “Alpha…” the Elder said cautiously. “Perhaps we should confirm the bond.” Kael’s thumb brushed across my knuckles. A shiver raced up my spine. “There’s nothing to confirm.” His voice was calm. Certain. “She’s mine.” The clearing erupted. “That’s impossible!” “She’s not even from a strong bloodline!” “How could she be Luna?” Whispers turned into arguments. I could barely hear them. My head was spinning. Mate. The word echoed again in my chest. My wolf stirred restlessly, pacing like a caged storm. Kael stepped closer until our shoulders almost touched. His voice dropped to a whisper meant only for me. “You’re trembling.” I swallowed hard. “Because you just ruined my life.” His lips twitched slightly. “Interesting reaction for someone who just became Luna.” He didn’t understand. He couldn’t. If he discovered the truth about my wolf… The pack would never accept me. And the Alpha would feel betrayed. The Elder raised his staff again, calling for silence. “If the Alpha has chosen,” he announced, “then Lena will undergo the Luna’s Trial at dawn.” My stomach dropped. Trial? Kael’s jaw tightened slightly. But he didn’t argue. Which meant… It was tradition. Something I couldn’t escape. The Elder turned toward me. “Step forward, child.” My legs felt like stone as I moved beside the Alpha. Every step felt heavier. More final. The crowd parted slowly, but their expressions were far from welcoming. Shock. Disbelief. Jealousy. Hatred. Especially from the women Kael had passed over. One of them stared at me with open fury. Selene. The Beta’s daughter. The woman everyone assumed the Alpha would choose. Her glare promised one thing very clearly. This wasn’t over. The ceremony ended quickly after that. But as the crowd began to disperse, Kael leaned down slightly, his voice brushing my ear. “Walk with me.” It wasn’t a request. My pulse jumped. The Alpha turned and began heading toward the forest path without looking back. And somehow… He knew I would follow.
