The Swift had a small crew to man the pair of large sails, and row the barge when the wind was low. With the heat of summer swelling, the long oars were needed to set off from the shore. Then, once the ship was underway, the water offered little resistance and the oars were pulled in and stowed away. As the snapping pennants of Redstone Fort shrunk and retreated behind, the wind grew in a steadier breeze. Whipping up over the water and filling the sails so that they were pulled taught against the mast. Atop the deck was the animal corral, Captain’s cabin and the steering deck.
