Chapter 29

1924 Words
29 The subject is what their arguments over the last week had been about: whether or not David should know.  Lucifer wanted it made clear that he was not to know who really sired him, that it would change things that it must go as he had planned.  Complete devotion is what he wanted, what he needed from David and knowing that he was not of his own blood would change things.  Or so he thought.  Lucifer was not all together lately, spiraling into a madness.  Really, he was just obsessed with what David would bring him and didn't want anything out of place to take it all away from him.  She stared at him from her chair, David still in her lap looking at Lucifer funny.  Bending her neck to look at him she smiled. "Why don't you run off and play a while, okay?  Lucifer and I need to have words."  She slid him off her legs and held onto his hand a few seconds before letting him go.  He slid past Lucifer, hunching over to make himself smaller as he went by and closed the door quietly behind him.  With a sigh she looked from the window to Lucifer, who was still standing with his arms crossed. "Really, Lucifer, what difference does it make, it can't possibly be that big of a deal." "These are very...Human notions and I would rather not be caught up in it.  He was not to know, those were the rules." "You have too many rules, Lucifer.  I'm surprised he keeps up with it all as it is.  It is not fair, he should know.  Lucian and I together confuses him he doesn't know what to think." "Lucian should have thought of that before he took advantage.  If he had not been so selfish and done what he had done, that boy would belong to me."  He had begun to pace but he stopped to gauge her reaction, which was a blank look. "You're serious?"  He didn't answer and she shook her head. “I would never have done it, Lucifer.  Not willingly at least.”   "You would have done as I told you, or you would have faced the consequences. Lucian spared you that by doing what he did, but he’s caused you a lot more trouble because of it too.” He stood there silent a moment and then turned to leave the room. ........... Many tantrums followed after David found out who Lucian really was and why he was always with his mother.  His jealously only got worse toward him and he often would get violent when Lucian went to her at night; waiting by her door for him.  Lucian would take no notice, simply lift the boy from the ground and move him to one side.  It was when he lie in wait with a knife when Addison had to have a stern talk with her son. Taking the small knife from his hand firmly she threw it to one side and looked at him. "What the hell is wrong with you, David?" He didn't look down, or away, he wasn't ashamed.  He just stared at her, brows furrowed and angry.  "Answer me." "You're mine, you belong to me.  I love you, mother, not him!"  His words were so familiar they took her by surprise.  So long ago she had heard similar words from Lucian.  "That is not your decision to make, David.  This is not something you should be worrying about.  If you want more time with me, just say so, and I will spend more time with you."  She had crossed her arms, looking down at the boy who was becoming very angry inside, her sweet little boy who seemed to do nothing wrong but simple childhood mischief.  "Where did you get the knife?" "I won't tell."  He looked away now, his own arms crossed. "Oh, I think you will."  She waited, leaning against the door, she could hear Lucian on the other side, feel his weight on the opposite side of the wood as he listened. "Who gave you the knife, David?  I'll be angrier if you don't tell me."  More silence.   "Fine, Caldaire!"  She called after his nanny and she came running down the hall way, still half asleep. "Take David to his room, lock him in. I don't care how much fuss he makes, how loud he gets how many threats he makes toward you, do not let him out."  "No!"  He stomped his foot down hard on the carpet and then as Caldaire moved to take his hand he threw himself on the floor.  The young demon simply took his hand and dragged him down the hall way, screaming all the way about how much he hated her, hated Lucian and hated his mother.  It was hard for her to punish him, but she knew he was spoiled and had never felt a hand across his rear end or been punished for doing something wrong.  She bit her lip, turned to put her forehead against the door and the one next to it opened, Lucian peeking through to look at her. "I should never have told him." “He’ll get over it."  He opened the door wider, and she slid into their room, into the comforting darkness.   She lay in his arms, staring at the ceiling. "I grew up hating my mother, and I've done it to my own child.  He hates me." “He hates the idea of us. “ Lucian corrected her and kissed her gently. "He'll be okay.  Don't worry too much about it."  She only nodded and closed her eyes, hugged a pillow and tried to sleep. .................... As promised, she spent more time with David; doing whatever he requested to keep him happy.  It was sometimes a whole day, sometimes just a few hours but as long as he was happy, she was happy.  He was, however, spending more time with Lucifer than she liked.  He would go to his lessons and stay over the allotted time; sometimes going to see him when he wasn't required too.  She didn't like it. It had been nearly three years since the war had started and all the worthy souls had been reaped from the Earth.  But those who had been left behind had slowly built themselves a new world to live in.  Stores had re-opened, and utilities had been turned back on.  She had been out with David all day, it was nearly his birthday and she had been out picking things up for a small party.  She held his hand, looking through produce that farmers had brought in, had managed to cultivate in soil that was almost completely depleted of nutrients, nearly poison to the seeds that were planted.  But some very crafty farmers had managed to plant and produce food that was safe for everyone.  It almost seemed like everything had gone back to normal but just one look at the sky and you knew it wasn't the same.  The sun was starting to burn out, and the grey cloudy skies were starting to turn red.   Completely engrossed in what she was looking at she didn't see the man who had come up next to her.  After a few moments he tapped her shoulder and she turned. "Excuse me, miss?  That man over there said you might need this."  He handed her a white handkerchief and then walked away.  She turned in a circle looking for whoever it belonged too and she finally laid eyes on Elohim, sitting at a small table at a cafe that had opened on the market.  Sniffing she suddenly realized her nose had started to bleed and pressed the white cloth to her face. Walking over to the table with David she sat down across from him, white slowly turning red as her nose continued to bleed and she glared at him a moment.  "A little bird told me you wanted to see me?"  He sat with his legs crossed, sitting back casually in the chair.  He wore a grey suit, white tie and grey shoes.  "Yes. “ She sniffed again and folded the handkerchief over to wipe under her nose again and was relieved to see that it had stopped. She crossed her legs and leaned on the table a little. "Why do you do that?" "Do what?"  He looked at her, that same, comforting smile on his face. "Make me bleed like that."  She looked to David, who had his arms crossed on the tabletop, staring the man down with a glare. "I don't do it on purpose; my presence does it, my energy. That gift that I gave you is made from that same energy. Therefore, when you are around me, around my angels, your body simply goes into overload. It’s as simple as that." "Oh...” She looked at her lap, pulling her hands into it and under the table. "You went the wrong way I'm afraid."  That was all he had to say about the subject and then he looked to David. "Now, how are we today Young man?"  David just stood in silence, his face half hidden by his arms as he glared at Elohim. "David, don't be rude, say hello."  She straightened him out, pulling his arms from the table and pulling the hat off his head.  He immediately grabbed the hat from her hands and pulled it on his head again.  The man in grey just laughed lightly. "Let him keep it on, I don't mind." "I'm fine, can we go?"  David looked at his mother with a scowl on his face and she only sighed. "No, we can't go.  You can go over there and brood if you want, but either shape up or sit and be quiet."  She had hold of David's wrist, squeezing it tightly, probably tighter than she should and he made a face and wrenched it away to go sit and be quiet.  "I'm sorry..." "Oh, that's quite all right.  He's a troubled little boy.  It's a shame he's had to be involved in all of this.  Now, what is it you wanted to talk to me about? You are risking an awful lot by meeting with me, it must be important." "Yes.  Nobody will tell me what will happen to him.  Nobody wants me to know.  Lucian knows, Lucifer knows and they skip around the subject." "Aah, I thought it might be about that.  Unfortunately I can't tell you either.  The more you know, the more it will change how this war will end." "There’s already an end determined? What difference does it make if I know what happens to him then?"  Her voice rose a little in frustration and she looked over her shoulder at her son.  He'd changed so much.  From such a sweet loving child to a boy who had nothing but anger in him.  For nearly six, his life was far more complicated than it should have been. "No, it isn't already determined, but every action you make with that boy changes how this war is tilted. And I'm afraid I can't tell you anything either." Tears ran down her face and she bit her cheek, frowning.  Gathering up her things she stood. "I'm sorry to have bothered you.  Don't expect me to ask for help again."  She walked over to David and took his hand and walked from the little make-shift market.  Elohim just sat there and watched as she left.   If he had a choice he would have told her that David would die at her hands, but to tell her that would be ending the war in Lucifer's favor.  If she knew, she would do everything in her power to prevent it.
