13 “Absolutely not,” I said, glaring at the old man. “He’s right,” Maren chimed in. “I can’t do that.” “I didn’t say it was permanent. I only want three days to go ashore. It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen another person. Meeting you has made me homesick.” “No,” I replied, shaking my head. Maren looked at me and I could see the rebelliousness in her eyes. I tried to make myself look stern, but Maren rolled her eyes. “I can do that,” she said. “Three days and you’ll be back. Promise?” “On my life,” the ferryman said. I didn’t like their arrangement.
