Chapter 2 The morning sun streamed through the window as I got ready for school, but my mind was still racing from the events of the previous day. I tried to shake off the unease that clung to me like a shadow. After a quick breakfast, I grabbed my backpack and headed out the door, determined to focus on something—anything—other than what had happened. At school, I met up with Lucy, my best friend. Her bright smile and bubbly energy were infectious, and for a moment, I felt a sense of normalcy return. We chatted about classes and boys, laughing as we shared our latest crushes. Nate, her brother, was still on my mind, but it was Shane—the older brother—who lingered in my thoughts like a ghost. After school, Lucy invited me over to hang out with her and Nate. I eagerly accepted, hoping to distract myself. The three of us settled in front of the TV, controllers in hand, as we dove into an intense session of PlayStation. Laughter echoed in the room, and for a while, I forgot about everything else. “Hey, Stara, can you grab us some sodas from the fridge?” Nate called out, his eyes glued to the screen. “Sure!” I replied, eager to take a break. As I stood up, I felt a flutter of nerves in my stomach, but I pushed it aside. I made my way to the kitchen, where the cool air greeted me. As I opened the fridge, I noticed Shane leaning against the counter, his arms crossed and a slight smirk on his face. My heart raced at the sight of him. He looked so effortlessly handsome, with his tousled hair and piercing eyes. I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. Pretending to search for a soda, I deliberately dropped my phone on the floor. “Oops!” I exclaimed, leaning down to pick it up. In that moment, I could feel Shane’s gaze on me, intense and probing. I took my time, letting my hair fall forward to shield my face as I leaned closer to the ground. “Need any help?” he asked, his voice low and teasing. I glanced up at him, my heart pounding. “Nope, I’ve got it!” I replied with a playful grin, trying to maintain an air of confidence. I could sense the tension in the air, a charged silence that hung between us. As I stood back up, I caught a glimpse of his expression—a mix of amusement and something deeper, something that sent a thrill through me. I quickly grabbed the sodas, trying to focus on the task at hand. “Here you go!” I said cheerfully as I returned to the living room, handing the drinks to Nate and Lucy. But my mind was still on Shane, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that this game was far from over.
