Chapter Three

Zoie looked as Tobias set his fork down onto the plate before gradually pushing it back. Putting the napkin in his grasp, Zoie left the man and sat in the seat opposite him. He had cleaned up nicely. During his bath, Zoie had taken the rest of his clothing and tossed them into the washer. Luckily, he had one more clean outfit so he wore that while the rest of his clothes were cleaned.  “Thank you for this meal!” Tobias stated. “It was truly one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time!”  “I’m flattered.” Zoie answered with a genuine smile.  “How old are you?” Tobias found himself asking.  “I’m twenty five.” Zoie answered. “I celebrated my birthday in September.”  “Really? Happy belated birthday then.”  “What about yourself?” Zoie asked.  “I’m twenty six.” Tobias replied. “I was born in July.”  Zoie stared at the man as he played with his fingers. To her, he looked nervous. As the room fell into an uncomfortable silence, Zoie stood up and cleared her throat.  “You can have my bed and I’ll take the couch.” She announced.  “I couldn’t do that.” Tobias said. “I’ll crash on the couch and you will continue to sleep in your own bed.”  “That’s no way to treat a guest plus I’ll be fine!” Zoie replied.  “I said what I said, Zoie.” Tobias said as he chuckled. Zoie found herself slowly sitting back into the chair while Tobias sat there with a smile. Zoie had been lonely for months and for a good reason too - however, she didn’t feel the urge to kill Tobias.  Incredibly, Zoie was intrigued.  "What do you like to do?" Zoie inquired.  “I enjoy listening to music.” Tobias answered. “Where are you from or have you always lived here in Doveport?”  “I’m originally from New York but I moved here a few months ago.” Zoie truthfully replied.  “New York is full of superhumans!” Tobias exclaimed. “Have you ever met one?”  Changing the subject quickly, Zoie coughed. “Are you from Doveport?”  “I’m from the Massachusetts area but not Doveport. I was born and raised in Boston!” Tobias replied.  “Any siblings?” Zoie asked.  “Only child.” Tobias replied. “What about you?”  “Two sisters.” Zoie mumbled. Tobias could tell that Zoie didn’t want to talk about it by the way her voice sounded. As he nodded his head to show that he understood, Zoie found herself standing back up to prepare to leave.  “Let me help you to the couch then.”  “I got it!” Tobias exclaimed while jumping up. As he turned to walk forward, Tobias bumped into one of the end tables causing him to lose his balance. Holding a hand up, Zoie stopped the vase on the table from falling as it floated in midair.  “You’re not used to this house as of yet.” Zoie announced as she placed the vase onto the table. “Let your ego rest and allow me to help you to the couch, sir.”  Tobias jeered however said nothing more as Zoie grasped his hand into hers and drove him towards the love seat. Zoie murmured in alleviation as she assisted Tobias with sitting on the couch. As she arranged to leave, Tobias grabbed her wrist preventing her from pushing ahead. Turning towards the man, Zoie peered down at his hand around her wrist. “Thank you, Zoie.” Tobias thanked as the corner of his lips slowly turned upwards.  “Goodnight Tobias.”
