EPISODE 4 - WITHIN THE CYCLE:

522 Words
CHAPTER 16 — SHARED SUSPICION Days passed under heavier air. Every bell, every announcement, every quiet glance in the hallways felt like a step closer to something inevitable. Elara kept the copied charter lines and old register page hidden deeper than ever; Kai stayed close, watchful, turning casual conversations into small checks - who was absent suddenly, who got moved classes, who was called to Valdez's office and came out quieter and paler. Damian remained distant as before - still the perfect Council Head, still the untouchable heir everyone avoided - yet Elara noticed small changes: he appeared where she was, not too close, never obvious... but always present like a silent guard or a shadow. She still mistrusted him - was he part of the bargain or the only one trying to break it? - but she couldn't deny: clues kept arriving only when he signaled. Late afternoon, rain swept heavy and grey over Blackwood grounds, turning yards dark and glass slick. Elara stayed behind to finish work in an empty classroom; when she stepped out, corridors were nearly deserted. Half‑way down the West Wing side passage - normally strictly off‑limits - she found a door slightly ajar, dim light leaking out. Before she could back away, Damian stepped out, looked sharply both ways, and motioned her in quickly and silently. Inside was a small, forgotten room: old maps pinned to walls, stacks of bound ledgers, faded diagrams of building sections and underground passages - the real layout, far bigger and more connected than official maps showed. "You risk too much alone," Damian said low, locking the door softly behind her. "And I can't keep guiding you if you guess instead of understand." "Are you guiding me... or herding me toward where they want?" Elara challenged, standing firm despite her pulse racing. "You're a Blackwood. You're Council. You know exactly when the Year of Settlement falls." Damian's expression didn't soften, but his tone dropped to something tired and sharp - almost bitter. "I know it better than anyone, because my family's name is written at the top of every contract... and every debt. I'm not the master of this place, Elara. I'm its keeper - and sometimes its prisoner." He tapped a large map where faint dotted lines ran under floors and walls. "They built layers: visible school above, hidden school below. And the cycle isn't just history - it's alive in every brick." "Why help us then?" "Because cycles break only when someone sees the whole shape." He stepped closer, voice quieter still. "You think I like silence? I hate it. But trust here isn't given - it's earned by surviving the same dangers." Elara looked at the maps, the dates marked in his neat hand, the names aligned exactly with her own notes. Suspicion didn't vanish... but it shifted - from is he the enemy? to can we survive together? Outside, heavy footsteps patrolled the corridor past the door, slow and deliberate. For the first time, they stood still and quiet together - two people from opposite sides, both now targets, both needing the truth.
