Chapter 19: Whispered Warning

280 Words
Whispered Warning Next day moved under heavier, quieter pressure - like air before a storm. Elara stayed close to Kai, sticking to crowded corridors and lit passages, always aware of where the nearest marked turn or hidden opening lay now that she could "read" the school. Between morning and afternoon classes, near the stairwell that led toward the old section, Lila Marco slipped beside her quickly, almost merging with shadow. Her face was pale, hands twisting nervously. "They changed the watch schedule - more guards, more checks. Zara's group now carries small notebooks... writing down names and times." "Did they add anything new to rules?" Elara asked low. "Not written... but spoken loud enough: 'This year's selection is almost set - don't make yourselves stand out.'" Lila glanced sharply around. "And Valdez was seen late last night opening Room 304 again... and another door deeper in West Wing - the one never unlocked before." Before Elara could press further, footsteps echoed fast down the flight above. Lila vanished instantly, gone before anyone could see them together. Kai pulled Elara smoothly toward the flow of students moving to next block, voice tight: "See? The closer we get to truth, the tighter they pull the net. If West Wing main chamber opens... it means preparation." That afternoon, Damian passed near them in the hall, speaking to another student normally - but as he drew level, his hand brushed the wall beside him, tapping three sharp slow beats: READY - WATCH - WAIT. Then he kept walking, calm, composed, exactly the image of authority. Elara understood clearly: the quiet alliance held, signals were set... and Blackwood Academy was waking its oldest, darkest machinery.
