JANE POV :
Maid? Who the hell they think they are. I am well educated. Perhaps, more educated than half of them,” I screamed in my mind. Kylie led me back to the pack house. The only difference is that this time she gave me instructions and I listened to her, “Maria is the only maid we had until now. She will give you your task everyday and with that you also have to follow the orders of fellow pack members.” My rage shot through the roof when her words fell into my ear. Who the hell she is to boss me around. I so much wanted to punch her and punch her freaking Alpha. We soon reached the packhouse. She made me stand in the center of the living area and assembled the entire pack house.
“Hey guys, I have an announcement to make. You all already know about Jane. She is going to serve as one of the maids here from this day on,” she declared pointing towards me. I kept my gaze down. The anger had still not subsided. My hand balled into fist when she called me maid. I could feel the piercing gaze of people on me and felt eyes stinging with tears. “Maria come here!” she called out and the same woman stood before me who used to bring me my food when I was kept in the room. The crowd dispersed and Kylie commanded her to teach me everything. “Go with her,” Kylie ordered me before climbing up the stairs.
“Come with me,” Maria said softly. I found pityness in her eyes when I looked up at her. My eyes were paining with anger and humiliation. My foot trailed her in a slow pace. She brought me to the kitchen. Thank god, there was no one around.I looked up and felt tears flowing down my eyes. “Hey, don’t cry. People here are nice. Just be obedient,” Maria tried to comfort me. She was the only person I liked in this entire house. Her soft voice made me cry even more. I had not been spoken to so kindly since the day I came here.
She acquainted me with all the chores that I was supposed to do and took me to the room where I was supposed to stay from today. Trust me, I have run out of adjectives. I don’t know how to describe the room. Cracked walls awfully plastered with old white paint that too was withering away. It looked thousands of years old. I noticed there was no bed, just a plastic chair. Before I could reach to the conclusion that the room is haunted, the woman broke the silence by dropping a bomb on me “This is your room.”
Maria familiarized me with all the members of the packhouse. Whereas she used to cook, I was tasked with cleaning the house. Well, I definitely did not have this in my mind when I thought of taking revenge on them. One week had passed by without seeing him. I concluded he rarely visits the packhouse.
“Jane, hey come sit with us,” Shanaya called me. I hate to admit it but the people here are good and friendly. They knew that I am a prisoner here but still they treated me like their own. Maybe, they were good people unlike their Alpha. Shanaya, James, and Laura were sitting together in the living room. I went up to them as I had finished my chores already.
“You humans are very slow,” Laura teased me. I smiled at her not knowing how to respond. Shanaya scooted over to make some space for me. “James has been asked out by a girl,” Shanaya explained.
“Yeah, this is my first time going out with a human girl. s**t, I am very nervous. Can you tell me what you guys do on a date? So that I could prepare myself?” He took over. His voice was laced with nervousness. Well his question took me by surprise. I had never been on a date with a werewolf so how would I know what they do differently.
“Well, we eat, watch movies sometimes and head back home. And if we like the person, we talk about meeting again. That’s it” I answered plainly. “That’s what we do too,” A relief washed over his face.
Although they lived in the woods, they were very much in contact with humans. James and many other pack members used to go to the college located in some other town. Then there were some who used to work for Alpha Josh who owned a big company. They had blended themselves so beautifully with human society.
After calling it a day, I came back to my room. I lied on the bed and closed my eyes as tears rolled down my cheek when I recalled my college days. The days were flying by like wind and I was still confused. I wanted to know more about Alpha- his weakness, his strength and everything so that I could hit him in the right spot and at the right time. But much to my dismay, people here refrained from talking about him. It seemed they had been prohibited from discussing about him. I let out a sigh and waited for the sleep to claim me.
In the middle of the night I felt thirsty and so forced open my eyes. I tried to ignore it for the first few minutes but eventually decided to get up realizing sleep was not going to get to me. The darkness had swallowed entire house accompanied by an eerie silence. I walked up to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water. But before I could make it out, I felt a hand on my shoulder. The grip was getting stronger with every second. A moment after I felt someone’s lips on my neck. Well, this much was enough for whoever he was to make me jump out of my skin. I turned around in anticipation of seeing his face but the dark was too dark.
My fear forced a shriek out of me which came out as a muffle as the man had covered my mouth with his hand. He again started kissing me on my jawline. I tried to push him off me but he was too strong. He shoved me towards the wall and it is then I hit him on the head with the water bottle I had in my hand. It did the trick. I managed to run out of his grip the moment his hand shot up to comfort his head.
What had I gotten myself into? This was the first thought that invaded my mind after I ran inside my room. I locked the door and slid down on the floor pulling my legs to my chin. Tears were dripping down my eyes and My heart was racing as if trying to get away from someone. I missed my brother who used to protect me from every evil. I missed my house, my friends, my freedom and….. suddenly an unsettling thought struck upon me. I missed Josh.
The next sunrise carried gloominess in its rays. I was sitting by my window watching the sun sprawling its way all around. I could not go back to sleep after that spine-chilling incident and that unwelcomed thought. A knock on my door snapped me out of my trance. I opened my gate only to see Maria there.
“Good morning. You overslept today, I guess,” she greeted me with a faint smile. I followed her to the kitchen and stopped dead on my track when I found the same water bottle on the slab. For obvious reasons, the bottle had gotten deformed and out of shape. I sucked on air in hope of blowing the memories of last night off my mind and moved to the sink to wash dishes.
“Jane, I will be needing your help in cooking as Alpha is going to join us today for dinner,” My heart swell after my mind was done processing her words. I feigned a smile. All of a sudden, I felt fear being replaced by relief. I don’t know why but the news put my heart at ease. I needed to see him.
The night arrived looking brighter than the day I had to push through. I tried to find out the person who harassed me last time but failed. There was no guy with any injury on their head. Well, the bottle was not heavy or sharp enough to mark any kind of injury. I made cupcakes and helped Maria with her cooking. Today was Christian’s birthday, the mate of Shanaya and Beta of Alpha. He was also the closest friend of Josh. For obvious reasons, his birthday was a special event in the house and so the Alpha was going to eat with pack members.
I was in the kitchen decorating the salad when Maria entered and said, “Alpha is here.” My heart skipped a beat on the announcement
