1 The Birthday Party

     "Mom are you sure we can throw a party today? I mean do we have enough money for all this? I really don't need the banners or the streamers. And come on don't you think the fog machine is a bit much? I am very happy just making myself a cake and watching a movie, Nothing special.""Sweetheart it is the first happy and special day since your father passed away, so lets have a little fun okay!""Okay mom what ever you say."" Now honey don't forget everyone will be here at 6:00 so you need to be here by at least 5:30 okay."" Mom don't worry I know, I already told my boss about the party so I should be off in plenty of time. I'm off to work now mom have fun with what ever you have planned for tonight and try not to go over board okay." Have a good day and don't worry you will be pleasantly surprised by what we have planned."" Wait what do you mean by we? who is we?"" Don't worry you will see tonight. Now get going before you are late."

     I have to say I love my job. As a life guard at the beach I get to do my two favorite things in the whole world. I get to hang out in the sun all day and play in the water every chance I get. I don't know why but I have always been happier in water than I am on land. SO when I say the help wanted sign for life guards I thought "Now here is a dream job." and I went for it. I have never been happier. Sitting here watching the blue waves shimmering in the sun is awesome. I love it. A perfect day is when no one attempts to drown. And today is one of those days so far. At about 1:30 I have to say I saw the hottest man on the whole beach. He stood about six foot three inches at least. He had a body made for water. you know the king that when he gets out of the water you really enjoy watching the water flow down those washboard abs. Oh I couldn't help but smile when he did just that. The water practically sparkled as it flowed down his body. Even though he was at least one hundred and fifty yards away I swear he turned and smiled at me, almost as if he heard my thoughts. I was so shocked I turned the other direction. If I didn't know better I really would have thought he read my mind or maybe it was the big smile on my face. Who knows but i watched him for the half hour he was at the beach. And let me tell you I really enjoyed the show.

    So I managed to get off earlier than I thought. I was on my way home by 5:00. When I got there my mother had not only the house decorated but the yard as well. I was totally shocked and amazed. But under it all I had to wonder why she did all this. I mean just a few months ago she treated me like i had the plague now this, total one-eighty. As I walked up the steps she opened the screen door for me.

     " Oh good your home, you need to hurry. Shower and change because the excitement is going to start soon.""Okay mom what ever you say. But we have time right I don't have to rush do I."" No you don't have to rush but you never know if we will have company before the party.""OKay, okay I'm going."

    As I walked up the stairs I couldn't help but wonder why birthday suddenly felt like a trap of some kind. And what is my mother really up too. Then I opened the door to my room and saw the dress laying on my bed and knew I was in some sort of trouble. Seriously what is going on?

    After staring at the dress for five minutes I went in and took my shower. As I look at the dress again I do have to admit it is beautiful. It is a full length flowing light purple dress. It is a bit snug in both the waist and chest but other wise I like it.Okay lets be honest here, I really love the color but that's about all. Looking down again I notice there is a matching pair of shoes to along with it. I never dress like this so I have to wonder why she is doing this to me. 

     At 5:45 I go downstairs thinking to ask her whats going on, but I see the house is already full of people. And I have to say as of right now I only know maybe three of the twenty people here. That would be me, my mom, and my boss. Then the door bell rings and in comes Steven and his family. So now I know eight people. The door closes and not even thirty seconds later the door bell rings again. I don't know any of these people either. What is going on here?

     The party started out fine. My mother introduced me to several of the people. It turns out that mostly everyone here is either some of her new friends or friends of Steven's. To be honest it really sucked, I mean it was supposed to be my birthday and instead of the party being for me it was actually for them. After a while I went outside and sat on the swing. I mean really they didn't need me there, they were having fun without me.

     For ten minutes I was enjoying the piece and quiet of my birthday when Steven came out and found me.

     "Why are you out here when your birthday party is inside?""Because I don't know any of those people. They are either moms friends or your family. And I don't know any of them either."" I'm sorry I can't control who she invites but I can sit out here and keep you company if you like."" Sure I guess its okay, after all we are the only to people here under twenty."" So how about I push you and we talk?"" Sounds go to me. But be careful I don't want to ruin the dress"" Yea whats the deal with the dress. I mean its pretty and all but isn't it a bit formal for a simple birthday party?"" I know what you mean I was wondering the same thing myself. When I came down stairs I was going to ask her about it, but the house was already full of people and I didn't want to cause a scene. You know it reminds me of one of one of those dresses they wear at those coming out parties."" You know I think your right. But why do that when we are already together?"" I really don't know. I think mom is loosing touch with reality or something."" Okay so I have an idea."" Whats that?"" Marry me!"" What?"" Marry me. It doesn't mean we have to do it right now. It just stops what ever she is planning."" She wont believe it if you don't have a ring."" Actually I do it was your birthday present."" Okay as long as we don't follow through with it any time soon. After all I am only seventeen and still in school. Plus I have plans for college."" Sounds good to me. I am willing to wait as long as you need as long as I can lay claim to you now before she gets whatever she has planned done."" Okay so what do you say we go ruin whatever plans she has for me."" Sounds good to me, lets go."

     As we head back inside I can't help but think he is my knight in shining armor. Always there to protect me.

     When we get inside he takes me to the table where all of my presents are piled up. I must say there are a lot of them. He pulls a small box from the back of the pile. He gets down on one knee, opens the box and says marry me. I couldn't help but smile as I said yes. Everyone that was close to us and heard what was going on started clapping. Then my mother came over and let me tell you if looks could kill we would both be dead. The look she gave us, and the look he gave her. It was so bad.

     The funny thing was not even ten minutes after our display mother broke up the party. That alone made it all worth it.
