Chapter Nine: Ashes of Trust The door slammed behind Claire like a shot fired in a quiet room. Daniel stood frozen, staring at the ultrasound photo Miriam had thrust into his hand. The rain outside beat against the windows like a furious chorus, echoing the storm that now tore through his chest. Two children. Two sisters. One broken man. Miriam lingered in the doorway, soaked and smug, a predator masked as a lover. “You don’t have to say anything yet,” she whispered. “Just know I chose you. I still choose you.” Daniel turned on her. “Chose me? You manipulated your way into my life. Into this.” She flinched. “You kissed me back.” “I was weak,” he hissed, voice sharp with self-loathing. “And you knew it. You knew about Isabel and Claire and still—” Miriam crossed the room in two swift steps, grabbing the photo from his hand. “I didn’t make this alone, Daniel. You don’t get to rewrite it now because you’re scared. You wanted me.” He stared at her, jaw clenched. “Not like this.” Her face fell, and for the first time, something cracked in her. “You think I don’t hate myself too?” she whispered. He turned away. She left. Morning – Claire’s Silence Daniel tried calling Claire. Seven times. Voicemail. He drove by her apartment. Her car was gone. Her lights were off. Her art studio locked. She had vanished—again. And this time, he wasn’t sure she’d ever return. He sat in his car for hours, rain dripping down the windshield, fingers white-knuckling the steering wheel. He had never felt so useless. So hollow. So utterly alone. Later That Day – Isabel Returns He didn’t expect the knock. Not after so many days of aching silence. When he opened the door, there she was. Isabel. She looked different. Cold. Composed. Her eyes, once warm with affection, were now glassy with something else entirely. Fury. She stepped inside without a word. “You heard,” he said. She laughed—bitter and short. “Oh, I heard. Claire left me a voicemail last night. Said she couldn’t do it anymore. That she was keeping the baby but wanted no part of you.” Daniel’s shoulders sagged. “Isabel, I—” “No,” she snapped, holding up a hand. “I don’t want your explanation. I want to understand what kind of man you really are. Because the man I loved, the one I wanted to build a life with, doesn’t exist.” He stepped toward her. “I made mistakes. I was broken—” “And you shattered all of us trying to fill that crack,” she interrupted. “Three sisters, Daniel. Three. And now two babies. Do you even realize what you’ve done?” His voice cracked. “I didn’t mean to hurt anyone.” “But you did.” Tears streamed down her face. “And the worst part? I still love you.” He reached for her. She stepped back. “Don’t.” Then she turned and walked away. Again. Nightfall – A Visitor in the Shadows Daniel didn’t move for hours. He sat on the edge of the sofa in the dark, bottle of bourbon untouched on the table. Outside, the city lights blurred through the rain-soaked window. Inside, his heart felt like broken glass beneath his ribs. Then the buzzer rang. He jolted upright. Checked the time. 11:13 PM. He hesitated before answering. “Hello?” A voice crackled through. “Daniel. It’s me.” It was Claire. He buzzed her in before his brain caught up. She stepped in, soaked to the bone. Her hair plastered to her cheeks, her eyes unreadable. “I needed to say something,” she said. Daniel nodded wordlessly. She walked past him, placed a small envelope on the table. “That’s a paternity test. I did it early, just to be sure. There’s no question.” He picked up the envelope, hands trembling. “Claire... why are you really here?” She looked up, breath sharp. “Because I thought I could forgive you. I thought... I could find a way to raise this child without hating you.” “And now?” Her voice was a whisper. “Now I’m not sure.” Daniel swallowed hard. “Then why come back at all?” “Because I don’t want Miriam to win.” He blinked. Claire’s eyes narrowed. “You think this is about you? No. This is about her. She plays the victim, but she’s been competing with Isabel her whole life. I was never part of that game until now. I didn’t want to be. But she dragged me in. And I won’t let her use our children to win some twisted race.” Daniel shook his head. “This is insane.” Claire stepped closer. “You better grow up, Daniel. Fast. Because you’re about to be a father twice over, and neither of us is going to sit around while you keep breaking things. Make a choice. Be a man. Or walk away.” She walked toward the door, then paused. “And for what it’s worth,” she added without turning, “I still believe there’s good in you. I just don’t know if it’s worth the damage anymore.” She left. The door clicked shut. Daniel stood in silence. Alone again, but no longer numb. Just... shattered.
