Hearts Entwined (Chapter 8)

Chapter 8: Secrets Revealed The days after Isabel's departure passed in a haze. Daniel hadn't heard from her. No texts. No calls. No signs. And that silence was louder than any scream. He checked her apartment every evening, hoping she’d return, but the lights stayed off, and the mailbox remained untouched. Her absence clung to him like a cold mist—seeping into his thoughts, his breath, his heartbeat. He tried to bury himself in work, in meaningless meetings and long drives, but nothing quieted the guilt gnawing at him. He had lost her. And he had no one to blame but himself. Meanwhile – Miriam Miriam stood in front of her mirror, adjusting the strap of her dress, red lips curled in a crooked smile. She looked stunning. Dangerous. But beneath that polished exterior, she was boiling. Isabel had walked away, yes, but not toward Miriam. Not with a fight. Not with drama. Just… silence. And that was worse. Because it left Miriam with nothing to rage against. Worse still, Daniel hadn’t called. Not once. Not to explain. Not to apologize. Not even to pretend. She threw her brush across the room. It shattered against the wall, bristles flying like tiny blades. “This isn’t over,” she whispered. Three Days Later – The Pregnancy Test Claire stood frozen in her bathroom, the white stick trembling in her hands. Two lines. Clear. Bold. Unmistakable. Her world tilted. She sat slowly on the edge of the bathtub, her heart pounding in her ears. She hadn't told anyone—not even Daniel—about that night. The one night. The mistake she promised herself never to speak of. But now... A child. A secret wrapped in silence and shame. She glanced at her phone, then at the test again, then back to her reflection. How had she ended up here? Evening – Daniel and Claire Daniel was sitting on the balcony of his apartment, drink in hand, when Claire arrived. She hadn’t called. She just... showed up, as if something inside her demanded she do so before she could lose her nerve. He opened the door with tired eyes. “Claire?” “Can we talk?” He nodded and stepped aside. They sat in silence for a long time, the city humming softly below them. Finally, Claire spoke. “I’m pregnant.” Daniel’s glass slipped from his hand. It didn’t shatter. It rolled to the floor and rested there, still full, as if holding its breath with him. His throat tightened. “Is it...?” She nodded. He buried his face in his hands. And Claire, ever the quiet one, whispered the sentence that would change everything: “I don’t expect anything from you. But you deserve to know.” The Knock at Midnight Just as Claire was about to leave, a knock echoed from the front door. Daniel frowned. “It’s almost midnight.” Claire’s hand froze on the doorknob. “You’re expecting someone?” He shook his head and moved to open the door. Miriam stood on the threshold, soaked from the rain, eyes wild with something unspoken. “I need to talk to you,” she said breathlessly. Her gaze flicked past him. Landed on Claire. Froze. Claire stared back, stiff and pale. “You’re here,” Miriam said slowly. “Of course you are.” “Miriam—” “Don’t,” Claire cut in, her voice brittle. “This isn’t the time.” Miriam’s eyes darted between them. “Oh, but it is. Because I’m done playing second to anyone. I came to tell you something. Something both of you deserve to know.” Daniel stepped forward, heart hammering. “What is it?” Miriam looked at him, tears building behind her fury. “I’m pregnant too.” The world stopped. Claire gasped. Daniel staggered back a step. “No,” Claire said. “You’re lying.” Miriam pulled a folded paper from her coat—an ultrasound photo, dated just days ago. “Believe what you want,” she said. “But he’s the father. Just like yours, Claire. Looks like we have more in common than I thought.” Claire turned and fled the apartment, slamming the door behind her. Daniel’s voice cracked. “Why now, Miriam?” She stepped closer. “Because I don’t want to be your secret anymore. I want to be the one you fight for.” He stared at her, shattered. Two sisters. Two unborn children. One devastating choice.
