|Michael| The blogs and news outlets had a field day the next morning. Everyone was going crazy about the divorce news, which was bigger than the ascension news itself. As I entered the company, their eyes raked all my movements and different murmurs filled the air. Some sides believed I was the one that called for it, while some believed it was my ex-wife. Everywhere was filled with groups of people trying to figure out my private life, but that didn’t bother me a bit. I just ignored their displays and went straight to my office. “Are you okay?”, Jude asked as soon as he closed the door. “Is there a reason I shouldn’t be? If I wasn’t prepared for all of this, I wouldn’t even have started”, I answered coldly, pulling off my suit’s jacket. “Should I block the articles? They keep pouring out endlessly”, Jude asked further. I shook his head, “They will rest when they milk it enough.” He wanted to proceed with the fact that I could have done that to at least protect Helena, but it was obvious that my answer would be that I didn’t have that responsibility. I am a businessman that never mixes pleasure with business. I knew exactly how and where to draw the line. “The new manager?” He dropped the file in front of me, “She will resume today.” I dismissed him and started the work of the day. The shareholders were concerned that the disappearance of Helena might affect the company, but I told them that there was nothing spectacular about her that any other financial analyst wouldn’t be able to do. I was heading out of the lobby with Jude when Steve strolled in. Steve is the son of my father’s younger brother, but we never had a good relationship. We fought every time while we were growing up and every attempt to make us reconcile was futile. While I am a business person, Steve doesn’t believe in being tied to a business, he preferred to live his life freely and do whatever makes him happy, without expecting much result in return. “You sure love to be in the news. Yesterday was about ascension and today divorce? Wow! At this point, you are a media celebrity.” His loud laugh filled the entire lobby and everyone rushed to their position at the sight of him. He rarely visited the company, but anytime he showed up, it meant trouble. “Isn’t that better than being insignificant?” I fired back, coldly, and Steve chuckled. “You erased all her traces. I had always known something was fishy and this was it. Helena deserves someone better after all”, Steve added with a low whistle before he whisked past me, who wasn’t listening to his bullshit anymore. *** A lot of reform went down in the company as I tried hard to remove her blueprint. I knew the implications of what I did and how it might affect the company with her sudden absence, but I had also prepared backups which I placed in their different positions immediately after Helena left. She did carry out her part of the contract well without any flaws. She was never clingy or asked me to love her or anything. We both agreed that we would let go of each other after the contract’s expiration and that was exactly what I did. Things went beyond our plans, but we had to stick to it. I wasn’t planning to let her grow on me or make me think if I should keep her near or not. “You keep picking on your food since. Does it not match your palate?”, Ava jumped into my face. Here she was again. My eyes rolled at her presence. She was always lurking in the corner and the absence of Helena surely gave her the excuse she needed. “When did you get here?” I managed to ask and continued my food as I thought about every other things I needed to put in place. There was a lot to do as the new Chairman, and I wasn’t ready for her bickering, not this time. “Well, I was never far away”, she stressed sexily, licking her upper lips that were baptized with the salad cream. Silence fell in the room at her answer. I needed to stop the conversation before it got more intense, and I was glad she didn’t drag it further. She knew about the contract I signed with Helena and always told me that I would come back to her whenever I was done with Helena. She didn’t lie, I was back in her hands. “Don’t worry, I am always here”, she giggled and ran off the table. I sighed. A woman was the last thing on my list at that moment. I needed to solidify my seat at the company, and it was giving me so much headache. There are several vultures waiting for the right time to have my head and I would never sit back to make that happen. I needed many powerful people on my side and that was one of the reasons I was considering Ava. I never knew what love was. I wasn’t interested in such trivial things. Even with Helena, we never spent any personal time together. Our rooms were far apart, and we went to work separately. We only appeared in public as a couple and every other thing, we did separately. I wasn’t concerned with her private life, but I was glad that she didn’t do something to smear my name. One of the reasons why she was my best card for my inheritance. “All the compensation has been paid to Miss Helena’s account and, according to my source, she left Spain this morning”, Jude informed me. That was all I needed, the maturity of Helena. She even knew it wouldn’t be ideal for her to remain in the country with me and left to be far apart. It was time to forget her.
