|Helena| The boardroom buzzed with muted conversations as I adjusted my blazer and stepped into the virtual meeting. My contact list had never been this valuable, and I was about to put every relationship I’d built over the years to the ultimate test. Michael’s company was struggling because Steve had seen to that by severing crucial ties, blocking collaborations, and sabotaging potential deals. If Michael had any hope of recovering his footing, we needed powerful allies, ones Steve couldn’t touch. The investors joining today weren’t just wealthy; they were industry giants. CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, heads of global hedge funds, and decision-makers in billion-dollar ventures. These weren’t people you casually called on for favors; you had to earn their trust, their belief, and their money. As the screen filled with faces, I greeted them with practiced poise. “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for taking the time to join me today. I know your schedules are demanding, so I’ll get straight to the point.” Their eyes narrowed with interest. They respected directness because they had no time to waste. “I’m presenting a unique investment opportunity with Clinton Enterprises. As you know, the company has faced challenges recently, but I assure you, these challenges are temporary. What remains is a foundation of innovation, resilience, and unparalleled potential for growth.” There was a murmur, seasoned with doubt, as soon as I stated my intention. I leaned forward slightly, letting my voice drop into a tone that commanded attention. “What I’m offering isn’t just an investment. It’s a partnership. A chance to shape the future of a legacy company while ensuring a return that will exceed your expectations. I’ve worked with many of you personally, and you know I don’t deal in empty promises. Clinton Enterprises is not only worth saving, it’s worth betting on.” The tension was high. All of them were staring at me as they thought about my offer. It was certain that I wouldn’t be able to win all of them over in the first place so I tried my best not to show that I was nervous. Some faces remained neutral, others were skeptical. Then, one of the toughest voices in the room, Anna Volkov, a notoriously shrewd venture capitalist, spoke up, and everyone paid rapt attention. “Ms. Mavis, forgive my bluntness, but why should we invest in a sinking ship? From where I stand, Clinton Enterprises looks like it’s going under.” A ripple of agreement followed her words. I expected this; it was Steve’s doing. His smear campaign had reached far and wide. I smiled and maintained my calmness so I wouldn’t yield to the pressure. “You’re right to ask that, Anna. But let me share some numbers that haven’t made the headlines.” I pulled up a slide deck on the screen, detailing Michael’s core assets, revenue streams, and the international markets where the company still held sway. “These numbers represent a company that’s been deliberately undermined, not one that’s failing. Clinton Enterprises’ market share in Southeast Asia alone remains untapped by any competitor. With the right infusion of capital and strategic guidance, this market could double in the next five years.” Their eyes rushed to the graphs. Anna folded her arms but didn’t interrupt as I walked her through. “And let’s not forget,” I added, “that Clinton Enterprises has something no competitor can replicate, which is deep-rooted relationships with supply chains, industry veterans, and now, all of you.” The murmurs shifted. Doubt was turning into curiosity. But just as I began to outline the projected returns, an alert popped up on my screen. A message from Jude: “Steve is making moves. Expect interference.” My stomach clenched at the announcement. Steve wouldn’t let this happen without a fight, and that I knew but I was hoping he would prove me wrong. ***** From his office, Steve smirked as he finished his call. “Are the rumors spreading? I need him to know that I didn’t wait all these years just to be swatted away like a fly. I will make sure the company he is fighting hard for will go into ruins. I will shatter it to the extent that he wouldn’t be able to put the pieces together.” “Yes, sir. By the time her meeting ends, those investors will be too spooked to sign anything,” came the reply on the other end. “Good, I can’t wait to picture the look of disappointment on her face,” Steve mocked. “Helena thinks she can outmaneuver me? Let’s see how she handles global panic.” **** |Helena| Halfway through my presentation, the tension in the room shifted. Phones buzzed, and some of the investors exchanged glances. Something was happening. “Is there an issue?” I asked, keeping my tone even, though my pulse raced. Anna frowned at her phone. “There’s news circulating about Clinton Enterprises. It’s a rumor about financial instability and potential bankruptcy.” I gritted my teeth. Steve was faster than I anticipated and he wanted to make sure the meeting went to naught. But I didn’t let the fear show; I know so much about Michael’s company that I can easily pull the records from my brain. “I assure you, those rumors are baseless,” I said firmly. “In fact, they’re exactly why this opportunity exists—to counter the misinformation being spread by competitors who fear Clinton Enterprises’ resurgence.” “Can you prove that?” another investor asked, his skepticism biting in. I exhaled, then pulled up a document from my files. “Absolutely. These are audited financials from the past quarter, verified by an independent firm.” The document appeared on their screens, and I walked them through each line. The room grew quieter as they reviewed the numbers. “This is why I’m here today,” I continued. “To ensure that the truth cuts through the noise. Clinton Enterprises isn’t going anywhere. With your backing, we can ensure that its growth not only stabilizes but accelerates.” Anna looked up from her screen with an unreadable expression. “You’re taking quite a risk, Ms. Mavis, betting your reputation on this.” I met her gaze without flinching. “I am. Because I believe in this company. And I believe in the people who will see it succeed.” There was a pause. Then, one by one, the investors began nodding. “I’m in,” Anna said finally. A wave of relief washed over me, but I didn’t let it show. “Thank you, Anna. And to the rest of you, I promise this will be a partnership you won’t regret.” **** As the meeting ended, I leaned back in my chair, exhausted but victorious. Michael now had a fighting chance. But as I packed up my things, my phone buzzed again. “We need to talk. Steve’s next move will be personal. Be careful.” It was Jude again, and his warning sent a chill down my spine. Steve wasn’t just trying to ruin Michael anymore. He was coming for me but I was well prepared. I will show him what it means to mess with the wrong person. ***** |Michael| When Helena called to update me, I could hear the strain in her voice. She had warned me not to ever call her during the meeting and I stuck to the instruction even though I thought my heart would burst while waiting for the outcome. “I’ve secured the funding,” she said. “The contracts are being finalized as we speak.” “That’s incredible,” I replied, genuinely impressed. “Helena, I don’t know how to thank you—” “Don’t,” she interrupted. “We’re not done yet. Steve knows what I’m doing, and he’s already trying to sabotage it.” Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. “What do you mean?” “I mean, he’s targeting me now, Michael. He’ll come after my reputation, my work—anything he can use to discredit me.” A surge of anger coursed through me. “I won’t let him. Helena, you’ve done more than enough. Let me handle Steve from here.” She laughed bitterly. “And how do you plan to do that? The same way you handled him before?” Her words stung, but she was right. I had failed to stop Steve before, and now Helena was paying the price. “Just… be careful,” I said, my voice low. “Promise me that.” There was a pause, and then she replied, “I always am.” But as the line went dead, I couldn’t shake the feeling that things were about to get much worse.
