Eyes downcast, Brother Simon nodded his head; the shame he felt at his admission weighed heavily upon him. He recalled the few minutes while he and Eileen made love, with her sat on top of one of the utility room"s four washing machines as he stood, positioned between her legs, his passion overflowing. “I"ll need Eileen"s address,” Devenish said, bringing the monk back to reality. Then he asked the most delicate question so far. “Does the lady have an ex-husband, or maybe a partner in the picture?” “No, thank God,” the monk replied without hesitation. “I"d never have allowed the situation to develop if she was a married woman. I"m not totally without scruples, Detective Constable.” Devenish could see that the admission had taken a toll on Brother Simon, but he was quick to reassure him.
