The Hollow

975 Words
The journey to the Hollow took three days. Three days of rain-soaked forests, hidden trails, and constant paranoia. Elira hated every minute of it. By the third day, her boots were covered in mud, her muscles ached, and her patience had completely disappeared. "You could at least tell me where we're going," she muttered. Adrian, riding ahead of her, didn't even look back. "I already did." "You said the Hollow." "Correct." "That explains absolutely nothing." A few of the rebels nearby laughed quietly. Elira glared at them. Cassian looked suspiciously entertained. Traitor. The forest around them grew denser with every mile. Massive ancient trees blocked much of the sunlight, leaving the world beneath their branches trapped in permanent twilight. The deeper they traveled, the stranger the woods became. Moss-covered ruins appeared among the trees. Broken statues. Crumbling stone archways. Remnants of a forgotten civilization long swallowed by the forest. Elira found herself staring at them repeatedly. "What happened here?" Adrian finally slowed his horse. "No one knows." "That's comforting." "The old stories claim this was once the heart of the First Kingdom." "The First Kingdom?" "The one that existed before Valerith." Elira frowned. "Before the Crown?" Adrian nodded. Before she could ask another question, the rebels suddenly stopped moving. Every rider became alert. Hands drifted toward weapons. Cassian's expression immediately darkened. Elira felt her stomach tighten. "What is it?" Nobody answered. Then she heard it. Horse hooves. Far away. But approaching. Fast. Adrian cursed quietly. "They found our trail." Fear swept through the group instantly. One rebel raced forward from the rear scouts. "Riders approaching from the south." "How many?" "At least twenty." Twenty. Elira's pulse jumped. Cassian looked toward Adrian. "They're moving faster than expected." "They have Nikolai." The name settled heavily between them. Nobody spoke for several seconds. Because everyone understood what that meant. If Prince Nikolai was leading the hunt... They were running out of time. — The Hollow appeared just before sunset. At first, Elira didn't realize they had arrived. The entrance was hidden beneath the ruins of an ancient fortress buried deep within the forest. Massive stone walls rose from the earth like the bones of a dead giant. Vines covered everything. Trees grew through collapsed towers. The entire structure looked abandoned. Until it moved. Elira blinked. The wall directly ahead shifted. No. Not the wall. A hidden gate concealed within it. Stone slid aside with a grinding rumble. And suddenly dozens of armed men and women emerged from the shadows. Archers. Soldiers. Scouts. An entire hidden army. Elira stared. "Gods." Adrian smiled slightly. "Welcome to the Hollow." The gates opened wider. Inside was an entire settlement hidden beneath the ruins. Homes built into ancient stone structures. Training grounds. Blacksmiths. Markets. Hundreds of people moving through the fortress. Families. Children. Soldiers. People who had built lives in secret while hiding from the Crown. For the first time, Elira truly understood the scale of the rebellion. This wasn't a group of rebels. This was a kingdom waiting to happen. — Whispers spread almost immediately. The Lost Heir. The Princess. The Queen's Daughter. Everywhere Elira walked, people stared. Some looked hopeful. Others looked curious. A few looked disappointed. As if she wasn't what they expected. Truthfully, neither was she. That night, Adrian led her and Cassian into the fortress's central hall. The structure had once been a royal chamber centuries ago. Now it served as the rebel council room. Maps covered the walls. Weapons lined the stone pillars. Leaders from across Valerith gathered around a massive wooden table. The moment Elira entered, conversation stopped. Every eye turned toward her. She immediately wanted to leave. Adrian gestured toward the room. "Everyone, meet the woman half the kingdom is hunting." "That's one introduction," Elira muttered. A few people laughed. Others did not. An older woman with silver hair stepped forward. She studied Elira carefully. Then slowly bowed. Not deeply. But enough. One by one, others followed. The room fell silent. Elira stared at them. "What are you doing?" The silver-haired woman answered. "Showing respect to the rightful heir." The words landed harder than she expected. Because for the first time... These people actually believed it. — That same night. Miles away. Prince Nikolai arrived at the abandoned battlefield where the Crown hunters had died. Rain no longer fell. Moonlight illuminated the clearing. Bodies remained exactly where they had fallen. Nikolai dismounted slowly. His soldiers waited behind him. The prince examined the scene without speaking. Every detail mattered. Broken branches. Footprints. Blood. Arrow placement. He crouched beside one of the dead hunters. Black Hollow arrow. As expected. Then he noticed something else. A second body nearby. The wound was different. Knife. Close range. Personal. Interesting. Nikolai studied the injury carefully. The strike had been precise. Fast. Lethal. Not the work of a frightened girl. The corner of his mouth twitched. Perhaps the lost princess was more dangerous than everyone assumed. A scout approached cautiously. "My prince?" Nikolai stood. "What is it?" "We found their destination." The prince's gaze sharpened instantly. "The Hollow." Silence. Then a slow smile appeared. Not a pleasant one. The scout visibly swallowed. "Do you want us to send word to the queen?" Nikolai looked toward the dark forest stretching beyond the clearing. Toward the rebels. Toward the princess. Toward the mystery that had haunted the kingdom for eighteen years. "No." The scout frowned. "My prince?" Nikolai mounted his horse. For reasons he couldn't fully explain, he wanted to see her first. Before the queen. Before the court. Before the kingdom. He wanted to know whether she was truly the monster prophecy promised. Or simply a girl forced to survive it. "Prepare the men," Nikolai ordered. The scout straightened immediately. "Yes, my prince." Nikolai's eyes settled on the darkness ahead. The hunt was over. Now the real game was about to begin.
