The Queen’s Fear

1038 Words
The throne room emptied quickly after the messenger left. No one questioned the queen’s sudden dismissal. No one dared. The nobles bowed their heads and disappeared into the palace halls whispering nervously among themselves while thunder rattled the towering windows of Valerith Castle. But Prince Nikolai remained. Of course he did. He stood near the throne watching Queen Seraphina carefully as the massive doors closed behind the final guard. Silence settled heavily across the chamber, broken only by the crackling fire beside the throne. The queen had not moved. Her fingers gripped the armrest tightly enough for her knuckles to pale beneath jeweled rings. Nikolai had seen her furious. Cold. Merciless. He had never seen her frightened. “Your Majesty,” he said carefully, “who is the girl?” Seraphina’s eyes lifted slowly toward him. “Someone who should have remained dead.” The answer only sharpened his suspicion. Nikolai descended the throne steps with measured calm. Shadows moved across the sharp angles of his face as candlelight flickered around him. “The messenger described the royal birthmark.” “I heard him.” “Then either someone is pretending to be the lost princess…” He paused slightly. “Or the impossible has happened.” The queen rose abruptly from the throne. “She cannot return here.” Something raw flashed across Seraphina’s expression before disappearing behind steel once more. Nikolai noticed anyway. “She?” he repeated softly. The queen immediately looked away. Too late. Understanding settled coldly inside him. The room suddenly felt smaller. “The princess survived,” Nikolai said quietly. Seraphina’s silence confirmed it. For several seconds, neither spoke. Rain hammered violently against the palace windows while firelight danced across the black marble floors. Finally, Nikolai broke the silence. “You told the kingdom she died eighteen years ago.” “She was supposed to.” The words landed like a blade between them. Nikolai stared at the woman who had raised him since childhood and felt something unfamiliar crawl beneath his skin. Unease. “How long have you known?” Seraphina turned toward the storm-darkened windows overlooking the capital below. “Since the night she disappeared.” “Then why hide it?” The queen’s jaw tightened. “Because if the truth becomes public, the kingdom tears itself apart.” Nikolai studied her carefully. “No,” he said slowly. “There’s more.” Seraphina closed her eyes briefly. When she spoke again, her voice lowered almost to a whisper. “There was a prophecy.” The word itself seemed to darken the room. Nikolai felt irritation immediately rise inside him. “Prophecies are stories frightened people use to justify terrible decisions.” “This one came from the Oracle of Ash.” That gave him pause. The Oracle’s predictions had shaped kingdoms for centuries. Wars had started over less than her visions. Still— “You ordered the death of your own child because of a prophecy?” His voice sharpened for the first time. Seraphina spun toward him. “You think I wanted that?” she snapped. The sudden crack in her composure stunned him. For one brief moment, the queen no longer looked untouchable. She looked haunted. “The Oracle said my daughter would destroy the Crown,” Seraphina whispered. “That she would drown this kingdom in ruin.” Nikolai said nothing. Because part of him could finally understand the fear. Not agree with it. Never that. But understand it. The queen moved slowly back toward the throne, exhaustion visible beneath the gold and black silk draped around her shoulders. “I did what I believed was necessary to save Valerith.” “And now?” Seraphina’s gaze hardened once more. “Now we finish what should have been done eighteen years ago.” The words settled heavily between them. Nikolai’s jaw tightened. Something about the idea disturbed him more than it should have. Perhaps because the lost princess no longer felt like some tragic story from the past. She was real. Alive. Breathing somewhere beyond the palace walls while the Crown discussed her death like unfinished business. The queen stepped closer to him. “I need you to find her.” Nikolai met her eyes evenly. “And when I do?” A dangerous silence followed. Then— “You know what must happen.” The prince looked away first. Not because he feared the order. But because, for the first time in years, he did not know if he wanted to obey it. — Far beyond Valerith’s walls, Elira sat beside the fire inside a small abandoned cabin hidden deep within the western forests. The storm had finally weakened outside, leaving only soft rain tapping against the roof overhead. Cassian sharpened a blade silently across from her. Neither had spoken much since leaving Greyhaven. Elira stared into the flames. Princess. The word still felt ridiculous. She had spent her life stealing bread when necessary, fighting men twice her size, and surviving one miserable winter after another. Nothing about her felt royal. And yet… The silver birthmark beneath her collarbone suddenly seemed heavier than ever. “You should have told me sooner,” she said quietly. Cassian did not look up. “I know.” “I deserved the truth.” “You deserved a life.” His answer silenced her. The blade scraped steadily against stone. Finally, Elira looked toward him. “Did my mother ever love me?” Cassian’s hand stopped moving. The fire crackled softly between them. When he finally answered, his voice carried something painfully close to regret. “Yes.” Elira frowned slightly. “Then why did she want me dead?” Cassian looked at her fully for the first time that night. “Because fear changes people,” he said quietly. “Especially powerful ones.” Something about the sadness in his eyes unsettled her more than the answer itself. Before she could ask another question— A branch snapped outside. Cassian instantly stood. Sword drawn. The cabin fell silent. Elira rose slowly beside the fire, pulse quickening. Another sound followed. Footsteps. Not one person. Several. Cassian’s expression darkened immediately. “They found us.” The cabin door exploded inward.
