4 The doorman held the door open for Artemis, then shook his head in confusion a second later. He stared at the door knob in his hand, uncertain why he’d opened it. Turning in Artemis’ direction, he saw only an empty lobby. Artemis walked up to his room in silence, the cleaning staff and front desk clerk unaware of his presence. The fewer people who knew where he was, the better. At one time, he’d lived in relative luxury, with a staff to take care of his every need. But he’d never earned their respect. They talked poorly of him and made fun about everything from his choice in meals to his attire. Still, it had been better than this.
