I spent today reading portions of Gravity’s Rainbow, which I only half understand. The sun was out, and a brisk wind was blowing off the lake from the north when I walked the dogs. Gravity’s RainbowWilliam Faulkner once said, “Man must lose something of value, man must learn to be afraid.” I have lost and I have been afraid. I fear being alone as I get older. That does not sound like the words of an eighteen-year-old kid, but if my parents died, there is no one left for me. My grandparents are all dead. My father’s older brother was twenty-two when he was killed in Italy during World War II. My mom’s sister lives in Australia. That is it. I have no one else. Kimberly is gone. Ashley is out of my life. If my parents were gone, I wouldn’t have anyone to spend Christmas with. I have though
