Lucy's point of view:
I woke up, opening my eyes to the familiar sight of my hut. I yawned and stretched, feeling like I had slept for a million years. My body responded well to the rest. As I touched my tummy, I noticed it was getting bigger.
Wait, why was I in my hut's bed? I didn't remember sleeping here. Thoughts of last night rushed through my mind, recalling being on the hill with Alex, resting on him. So, how did I end up back in my hut? I don't recall walking from the hill, and that's quite a journey. I sat up, puzzled.
"Finally, you're awake," Suzy's voice startled me. I turned towards her; she was sitting on a wooden chair near the bed.
"Suzy? How long have you been here, and how did I end up here? I don't remember coming back home," I asked.
"Tsk tsk tsk, how would you remember when you were sleeping so soundly on Alex's arm?" She teased.
"What?!" I stood up from the bed. "Why didn't he wake me up? I could have gone home by myself." I frowned.
"I am not him, and I didn't carry you home, so I wouldn't know," she said. I looked at her accusingly. "Why didn't you wake me up since you saw me with him?"
"How could I?" She asked, shaking her head. "It is the first time I have seen Alex sleep so peacefully. He has never slept like that since I knew him.
I didn't have it in my heart to disturb him," she said, her voice carrying a hint of pity, and her face reflected her emotions. Suzy, with her pregnancy, seemed to experience a lot of emotions, unlike mine that came and went.
"You were there at the hill?" I asked, and she nodded. "Why? That seems like a lot of trouble for a pregnant woman like you." I winked at her growing tummy, which was bigger than mine.
She smiled a bit, rubbing her tummy, and then she said, "I should be asking you the same question, but seeing the sight of you and Alex, I could bet that he lent you support to get to the top of the hill," she added.
The way she spoke, it was as if she was sure he had supported me, making me wonder if he had done it for other females in the past.
I shrugged. "Does he often take people there? And does he assist them to climb?" I asked, feeling a bit betrayed by him.
"No, he doesn't. But knowing his personality, he wouldn't let a pregnant woman climb that high hill without supporting her, and to make it worse, a weak werewolf," she explained.
"He is such a gentleman; he won't allow it." She coughed to clear her voice. "As for the question 'why I was there,' I went to pick some herbs that old Rita badly wanted. And most importantly, it was for our babies and us," she affectionately rubbed her tummy.
"Okay," I said. Suzy was different from others. I loved how she took her time to answer my every question without criticizing me. Is this how a friend behaves? If so, I am happy she is my friend. She and Rebecca are the first friends I have made, and they are wonderful people. I smiled slightly.
"I wonder what you did to make him sleep so peacefully," she looked at me, smiling.
"I didn't do anything, I just slept," I replied, thinking about what happened last night. There was nothing special; I had only slept. I stared at her, realizing that Alex hadn't slept well at night. I wondered why. "Was he the one that brought me back?" I asked.
"Yeah, he was the one. He wrapped you gently, carrying you in a bridal style this morning. Everyone's eyes were on you. It's not been too long since he dropped you in your hut," she said with a sly smile.
I gasped. "I shouldn't have fallen asleep." I looked at my feet.
"I am thankful you did, and you should be grateful you did. You helped a person who never sleeps well at night finally sleep peacefully. You should be happy," she said and then stood up.
"All right." She cheerfully looked at me.
"Let us go to Old Rita's hut. She asked for our presence today to check on our babies and how far along we've gone." Suzy winked.
Suzy held my right hand and impatiently dragged me out. Seeing that I was dragging my feet, we went to Old Rita's hut. After exchanging pleasantries, Old Rita began to assess us, carrying out procedures to check on our babies and us.
She checked Suzy first before turning to me. Suzy and I supported each other emotionally throughout the check-up.
"You look more lively than you did last time I saw you," Old Rita said to me after finishing the check-up on our health and that of the babies. "And your baby is doing great too," she added, smiling. Suzy and I exchanged smiles.
"I guess the pack is filled with happiness, and it affected me," I smiled, glancing at Suzy, who was happy to hear that I was content being with them.
Old Rita smiled. "I am happy to hear you say that. The Rogues are good people and will bring the best to you, maybe not completely, but it will be better than your former pack," Old Rita said. "Though-I still feel very guilty for leaving my grandma behind." I looked at my feet sadly.
"I wonder how worried she is, if she has eaten, what evil they could have done to her, how she is faring." As I kept speaking, I started tearing up, my hormones kicking in. Suzy didn't interrupt us; she only patted my back for consolation.
"Sometimes, we are forced to abandon people we love, not because we want to but because we need to, for the survival of everyone. It will hurt, but you know that it's the right step to take," she said, her voice carrying emotions, grief, and pain.
The way she spoke felt like she was sharing from personal experience. "Have you ever been forced to abandon someone you love?" I asked.
Old Rita looked away. "Doesn't everyone do so at some point in their life?" With that, she ended the conversation. She gave Suzy and me some herbal drink that she said would help us during our pregnancy.
Suzy engaged her in a conversation that I knew nothing about, and I couldn't join them. I had to excuse myself to take some fresh air, so I wouldn't feel left out. As I strolled, I saw Rebecca screaming at a werewolf to hasten up.
"Is everything okay?" I asked Rebecca, looking at the werewolves preparing to go hunting. They were acting like they were in a hurry. "What is going on?"
"Oh, nothing much. We just found a new spot for hunting, and we are going to check it out and see if it's okay for us to hunt there," she replied.
"Isn't that good news?" I asked her.
"Yes, it will be after we have checked the place and know the precautions to take if we are going to be hunting there."
Rebecca stared at me with curious eyes. "I heard that you and Alex spent the night outside and only returned this morning," she said to me. "Is there something I should know?" she asked.
"Not really, he just took me to the top of a hill, nothing more. I guess he wanted me to get used to the environment around our huts," I explained.
"Is that it?" she asked.
"Yes," I answered. "I fell asleep; that's why he had to bring me back home. I know since I'm pregnant, he probably did not want to disturb my sleep."
Rebecca walked closer to me and straightened the clothes I put on. "You know that Alex and I have something going on, right?" she asked.
"I know," I reassured her, even though I knew it was strictly a one-sided relationship she was having with Alex.
"That's good because I won't give a damn if I had to crush you to gain him," she said, her eyes cold and her voice sending a shiver down my spine.
It made me think of Bianca and her deeds, but this could not be compared to that, or maybe I just haven't seen that part of Rebecca yet.
