I sputtered, expelling water and blinking against the sudden light. Suzy's wide eyes met mine, relief flooding her tear-streaked face. She threw her arms around me, crying, "I knew you couldn't die like that!" The warmth of her embrace and the salty taste of her tears mingled with the lingering chill of the river.
Rebecca, standing nearby, looked as shocked as if she'd seen a ghost. But then, without a word, she rushed in to join Suzy in the tight hug. "I'm so sorry," she murmured, clutching me tightly, my baby cradled in her arms.
