Shane.
Shane answered the phone without looking the caller ID. He didn't need to, he knew who was calling at this hour.
"Hello, councilman Smyth. How are you this evening?" He said, as he turned away from the party and began walking towards the house.
" I'm doing very well Shane. How was the wedding? Have they already left for their trip?"
The man chatted in a warm friendly tone, acting as if he didn't have anything else on his mind, although Shane knew better. The small talk and chit-chat was all part of the routine.
"The wedding was beautiful, Sir. You just missed them, they headed out about ten minutes ago."
"Good, good. " The councilman growled. "I was hoping to miss Seth. I think it's best if he's not in on this one. He and Jade are too new. He might be a little too distracted right now. "
"Maybe." Shane said non-comentaly, not wanting to agree or disagree with one of the bosses.
Shane crossed the lawn and stepped through the back door into the kitchen. Then he grabbed a beer from the fridge and sat down at the kitchen island. Dragging the pen and pad Jade kept there he settled in to wait until the councilman decided he'd chatted long enough and got down to the reason for a call this late in the evening. Shane picked up the pen and started doodling not really paying attention to what he was drawing. His mind drifted a bit as councilman Smyth talked, first complaining about the weather then drifted on to talk about his college aged kids and on to his wife's latest shopping spree.
By the time he got around to why he called Shane was so busy with yes and no at the appropriate times that he almost missed it.
"So." He finally said "We've got word that Robert was spotted not far from the California/ Nevada border. We sent a tracker to confirm and see if he could locate his bolt hole or at least get close enough to go looking. "
"Good, what's the plan so far?" Shane asked.
" Not a whole lot so far, but I need you in Sacramento tomorrow evening. Our tracker will be back by then, he'll meet you at one of the local bars with the information you'll need. I'll let you know which one tomorrow afternoon."
" Ok, I'll leave first thing in the morning. We thinking I should get a hotel for the night?"
" Yes, I would think so. It's probably best you take the time the study any information you get and the maps for the area we think he's in."
"OK, I'll find a room and be waiting for the call." Shane said
"Very good, safe travels then. I'll call you tomorrow afternoon. Goodnight. " He said, then disconnected the call before Shane could say another word.
Shane shook his head as he set down the phone. Glad the call was over, the councilman was a good man but he really was Shane's least favorite to have to deal with. Before he stood up he happened to look at his doodle. Usually it was loops and swirls with the occasional flower looking swirl. This one, though.... looked almost like an... angel... What the Hell?
He stared at it for a moment completely baffled about why he would draw anything like that. Then he ripped the page off the pad and stuffed it deep into his pocket. Feeling his odd mood beginning to creep back in on him, he snatched up his beer and left the kitchen. He stomped down the hallway to his room to get a shower and a good night's sleep before the hunt began.
Beep,..... beep.... beep......
Shane groaned and rolled over, making a blind grab for his phone. He shut the thing off without opening his eyes and rolled back over hoping to go back to the most erotic dream he'd ever had. Instead, now that he was awake the dream melted away even as he tried to hold it and remember it. All he was left with was how his dream girl had felt in his arms and the impression of long curly blonde hair.
He finally gave up after a few minutes and threw the blankets off to roll to his feet. Then, grumbling under his breath, he made his way to the bathroom. He was completely out of sorts and blamed the councilman for ruining his night last night. He figured he really needed to find a willing woman, especially considering his disrupted dream this morning.
After taking care of his morning bathroom stop he snagged his duffel bag from the back of the closet and tossed it on the bed. Then he moved to the dresser and took on a couple pairs of black jeans threw them on the bed with the duffel. Then pulled out a hand full of dark colored T-shirts and a few other things he might need. He didn't need to pack any weapons, those were already packed into the saddle bags on the bike. He was thinking he would probably spend most of the next few days in wolf form but a few clothes were still needed.
He stuffed everything in the bag then finished dressing. He stomped his feet into his big black leather boots, slung the bag over his shoulder and picked up his keys and wallet as he left the room.
He set everything on the table next to the door and took his leather jacket off the hook, laying it on top of everything. He smiled when he heard Jades mom moving around in the kitchen and decided to join her for coffee and breakfast before he took off.
"Good morning, Shane!" She exclaimed as he stepped into the room.
"Morning, Mom." He greeted in return as he got his coffee.
The warm, delightful woman had insisted he and Seth called her Mom. She said that she had gained two new sons when Jade and Seth met.
" Would you like something to eat? What are you up to so early this morning?" she asked
" Yes, please. I got called in to work last night,so I have to take off first thing after breakfast I'll probably be gone a week or so. Will you be OK here? Or should I have someone come check on you?" Shane said
" Oh, no dear. Everything here will be fine. Jade already has everything set up. This place could run several months without any of us here." She said.
She smiled as she flipped a Spanish omelet onto a plate and slid it in front of him. Then she set plates between them with hash browns and bacon and sat down opposite him.She watched him for a few moments as he helped himself to the bacon and a couple big scoops of the perfect hash browns. Then she dug into her own meal. After they had eaten he helped with the dirty dishes, said goodbye and gave her a big bear hug.
He stopped at the table and shrugged into his jacket and paused staring at himself in the mirror above the table. He grinned at his reflection, his turquoise blue eyes twinkling as he took in the sight of his shoulder length jet black hair tied in a low ponytail, his unshaven two day scruff. With the leather jacket and tattoos climbing up his neck, he looked like a dangerous biker. The whole look seemed designed to make people notice him and avoid him at the same time. He laughed to himself as he slipped his sunglasses on and stepped out the door.
