Lucy’s Pumpkins was out near the apple orchard and Owen’s place, and it was easy for Kiko to direct Dom there. Every year the woman held a Drunk-O-Lantern event, where she stocked up on cheap wine and discount snacks from Gord’s, and extended an open invitation for everyone in Mount Angus to come over, carve up the unsold pumpkins in the field, and get drunk. Lucy had to be seventy now but she seemed ageless to Kiko; he could remember going to Drunk-O-Lanterns with his mother, father, and sister in high school.
Some things never changed. Lucy’s house was still ghastly; anyone going inside to use the bathroom would be confronted with the full range of pastels and florals. The pumpkin patch was huge and picked over, and the corn maze she did every year rustled in the October win
