Lines in the Sand

821 Words
Jace The air smells of wet asphalt and pine, heavy with the lingering scent of smoke from last night’s skirmish. The Cobras are bold, testing every boundary, every weakness, and I can feel it in my bones — they’re planning something big. Ace is behind me, Wiley flanking the other side, and the rest of the Devious Men are in position. Everyone knows what’s at stake. Willow Point is more than our town; it’s our home. And anyone who tries to take it will pay. The interstate is quiet for now, deceptively so. My mind drifts briefly to Emma — the way she’s been watching, waiting, trusting me. I tighten my grip on my bike handles. I don’t just protect this town. I protect her. And anyone who touches her will regret it. A flash of movement in the trees catches my eye. The Cobras are coming. ⸻ Emma The library feels smaller today, more fragile than usual. Dawson is quietly reading, occasionally glancing toward the window. My chest tightens with each passing minute. I shouldn’t be here. I know I shouldn’t. But I can’t stop worrying. And even as I try to keep busy with organizing the weekend event, my thoughts drift to Jace. I imagine him on the streets, watching, guarding, ready for anything. The sound of a motorcycle engine cuts through the quiet. My heart leaps. I know that engine anywhere. Jace. He pulls up to the curb, dismounts, and strides inside, eyes scanning the room, then resting on me. Relief floods me, mingled with something else — something warmer, more intimate. “You shouldn’t be alone,” he says softly. “I know,” I reply, voice barely above a whisper. He steps closer, brushing a strand of wet hair from my face. The proximity is electric, and I feel my pulse quicken. “I can’t let anyone touch you,” he murmurs. “You won’t,” I whisper back, trusting him completely. ⸻ Jace Outside, the Cobras are moving in, but my focus is split between the impending threat and the woman standing before me. I can’t afford distractions — yet every fiber of me aches for her. “You’re safe here,” I say, brushing a hand across her cheek. “I’m not leaving.” Her eyes search mine, hesitant, then soften. “I… I trust you,” she whispers. The words hit me like a punch to the chest. Trust is fragile, but she’s giving it to me willingly. My thumb brushes against her lips in a gentle, fleeting touch. The intimacy, though soft, sparks something deep and undeniable between us. But duty calls. I step back reluctantly. “Stay inside. Lock the doors. Don’t open them for anyone but me.” She nods, and I know she means it. ⸻ Emma Minutes feel like hours as I wait inside, Dawson quietly beside me. The storm outside the town feels closer now — tires squealing, motorcycles roaring, men shouting. I don’t need to see it to know Jace is out there, facing danger to protect me. The thought is both terrifying and intoxicating. I close my eyes and feel the memory of his touch on my face, the warmth of his hand on mine, the soft brush of his lips at my temple. Even in the fear, the adrenaline, I feel safe. I feel… wanted. The world may be falling apart, but for a brief moment, I let myself lean into him, into that trust, that bond, that desire restrained by respect. ⸻ Jace By the time the dust settles, the Cobras have retreated. The interstate is quiet, the pine-scented air finally calm. I return to the library, drenched and exhausted, but my eyes immediately seek her. She’s there, Dawson curled at her side, eyes wide and relieved. Relief floods me. Nothing in the world compares to the sight of her safe, trusting, alive. I step closer, letting the world fall away. “You’re okay,” I murmur. “Yes,” she whispers, and I see the tremor of emotion in her voice. I brush a wet strand of hair from her cheek and lean in, brushing my lips softly against hers — a kiss that says everything words cannot. Protection. Desire. Promise. She closes her eyes, leaning into me. I pull her gently into my arms, holding her close, the rain outside fading into insignificance. The Cobras, the danger, the past — none of it matters in this small, perfect moment. We pull back slightly, foreheads resting together. Her lips part, voice trembling softly: “I trust you.” “I know,” I reply. “And I’ll never give you a reason not to.” For the first time, I allow myself to imagine a future where we face everything together — the danger, the chaos, and the love building between us. And I know, without doubt, that nothing will break us.
