Fire on the Horizon

794 Words
Jace The sun hasn’t fully risen, but Willow Point is already awake — or at least, half of it. Smoke drifts in the distance, curling up from the outskirts of town. My stomach tightens before I even reach the edge of the interstate. Ace and the men are already in position. Wiley gives me a nod as I pull up. “They’re moving faster than we thought,” he says. “Looks like the Cobras are testing all our weak points at once.” I grip the handlebars of my bike tighter, scanning the horizon. A truck with a crimson insignia moves along the treeline. They’re bold — reckless — but that’s exactly why we can stop them. “Let’s keep this clean,” I say to Ace. “We don’t need to escalate more than necessary. But make it clear — Willow Point isn’t theirs.” The adrenaline surges, the familiar thrill of protecting my town mixing with something else entirely: the image of Emma, waiting, trusting me, relying on me. I tighten my jaw. Anyone who touches her pays a price. ⸻ Emma The library feels too small, too fragile, as I watch from the window. Dawson sits nearby, coloring quietly, trying to pretend he doesn’t notice the tension vibrating in the air. My heart hammers with every engine echo, every distant shout. I shouldn’t be here. I shouldn’t be this close to danger. And yet, part of me feels… alive. Protected. Safe, because Jace is out there, leading the fight. Hours feel like minutes. Then, finally, I see him — Jace, on his bike, commanding the street, muscles tense, eyes sharp. My pulse jumps when he looks up and locks eyes with me. In that brief moment, I know: he will not let anything touch us. ⸻ Jace The fight is messy. Trucks skid off the road, engines screaming, men shouting. But the Devious Men move with precision — decades of experience, instinct, and loyalty driving us. I intercept the lead Cobra, Braden, and his second-in-command, Jimmy. Their arrogance is palpable. They think they can intimidate our town. They’re wrong. “You shouldn’t have come here,” I growl, voice low and dangerous. Braden sneers. “This is just the beginning. You can’t stop us.” “I don’t need to stop you,” I reply, “just keep you from leaving alive.” The confrontation is sharp, brutal, but controlled. We’re defending more than property — we’re defending people, lives, and the fragile peace our town depends on. Even as the fight rages, my thoughts drift to Emma. She’s upstairs, safe, but I can’t shake the image of her watching, heart racing, waiting for me to come home. That thought sharpens my focus, fuels my strength. ⸻ Emma Hours later, the dust has settled. The interstate is quiet. The Cobras have retreated, leaving chaos in their wake, but no one in town is hurt. Jace walks up the driveway, soaked, exhausted, and every part of him tense. He looks at me — really looks at me — and for a heartbeat, I see something I’ve never seen before. Vulnerability. Relief. Something tender hidden beneath his rough edges. “You’re safe,” he says softly. I want to reach for him, to throw myself into his arms, to feel the warmth and protection I’ve come to crave. And when he steps closer, there’s no hesitation on either of our parts. Our lips meet in a soft, lingering kiss. No urgency. No push beyond what feels right. Just two people, holding on to each other amidst chaos. “I don’t know how you do it,” I whisper against his chest. “I do what I have to,” he replies, voice low, brushing wet hair from my face. “But this… protecting you… that’s different. That’s personal.” I close my eyes, letting myself feel it all — relief, desire, trust. The storm of the past days, the fear, the danger — it’s all melted away, leaving only us. ⸻ Jace Later, after Dawson is asleep and the town is quiet, we sit on the porch, rain dripping softly from the eaves. My arm is draped over her shoulders, holding her close. The world feels fragile and tense, but for the first time in weeks, it also feels… right. “I won’t let anything touch you,” I murmur, voice low. “Not the past. Not the Cobras. Not anyone.” “I know,” she whispers, resting her head against my chest. “I feel it. With you, I feel safe.” Her words, her trust, settle over me like a promise. The danger isn’t gone — I know that. But for tonight, for this moment, we have each other.
