Blood on the Border

749 Words
Jace The highway is dark, slick with rain, and every shadow feels alive. Wiley and I ride hard, engines growling like predators in the night. Word came in a few hours ago: the Crimson Cobras are moving weapons along the interstate. They’re testing our borders — testing me. Ace is coordinating the backup from the clubhouse, but I’m the first on site. The roads wind like snakes through the pine forest, and I can hear the distant growl of engines not ours. I tighten my grip on the handlebars, eyes scanning every curve, every shadow. This is no drill. This is war. Ahead, I see it: headlights cutting through the mist, a caravan of vehicles carrying cargo that shouldn’t exist. I signal Wiley. We split, flanking them. Engines roar. Tires screech. Adrenaline floods me. I don’t hesitate. This is our territory, and they’re about to learn the consequences of crossing it. ⸻ Emma I’m at the library, closing for the night, when I hear it: the distant rumble of bikes and trucks, the unmistakable echo of engines racing. My stomach drops. Dawson is asleep upstairs, oblivious, but my pulse is screaming. I grab my phone, dialing Jace’s number again and again — straight to voicemail. My fear rises as the noise grows louder, closer. And then he’s here. He bursts through the door, wet hair plastered to his forehead, jacket dripping rain, eyes dark with urgency. He doesn’t speak. He just scans the library and the street outside, then back at me. “Stay here,” he orders. “Lock the doors. Don’t leave.” I nod, swallowing hard. “What’s happening?” “The Cobras. They’re moving weapons. I’m taking care of it. You and Dawson stay here.” I want to argue, to insist on going with him, but his stare stops me. He means it. And part of me knows he’ll do it anyway — whether I agree or not. ⸻ Jace The fight is brutal and fast. The Cobras thought they could surprise us — transport weapons under the cover of night. But they didn’t anticipate the Devious Men. Motorcycles skid to block roads. Wiley intercepts their lead truck. Ace coordinates from the rear. And I go straight for the middle, where the Cobra leader, Braden, tries to intimidate. He’s fast, cunning, but not fast enough. One quick maneuver, a collision of metal and force, and the truck skids to a halt. Their men scatter into the woods. Breathing hard, I wipe rain from my face. Victory feels hollow — temporary. The Cobras won’t give up. They never do. And yet, even amid the chaos, I can’t stop thinking about Emma. About Dawson. About the promise I made to keep them safe. ⸻ Emma Hours later, after the last vehicle has fled and the engines quiet, Jace returns. He’s soaked, exhausted, but alive. He drops into the chair beside me, letting out a long, ragged breath. “You’re safe,” he says simply. I nod, though my hands are still trembling. Dawson peeks out from upstairs, sleepy-eyed. He runs to Jace and throws his arms around him. “You kept us safe,” I whisper, voice low. Jace looks at me, and for a long moment, there’s nothing but the storm outside fading into silence. Then he leans closer, his lips brushing mine in a soft, lingering kiss — a promise, a spark, a release of all the tension we’ve held back. My hands move to his chest, feeling the solid strength beneath the soaked leather. The world outside may still be dangerous, but here, in this small bubble, it’s just us. He pulls back slightly, eyes dark with emotion. “I can’t stop thinking about you,” he admits, voice low. “Not now, not ever.” I swallow, heart pounding. “I… feel the same.” And that’s all we need. For now. The rest can wait — the Cobras, the danger, everything else. Tonight, it’s just us. The storm outside has passed, but inside, something new begins. A fire neither of us can — or wants to — put out. ⸻ Jace Riding back to the clubhouse later, my mind is on her. Emma. Brave, fierce, vulnerable. Everything I’ve been trying to protect, everything I’ve been trying to fight for. I’ve faced down guns, roads slick with rain, and men willing to kill for nothing. But protecting her… that’s different. That’s personal. That’s mine. And I’ll never let anything take her away.
