Chapter 6: The Game Begins

1126 Words
Sophia had always known Emily Sinclair would not go down quietly. Girls like her—the effortlessly beautiful, socially untouchable, queen-bee types—never give up without a fight. It wasn't just that Liam dumped her. It was all about control. Emily had spent years sculpting her image, ensuring that everyone at East Haven High knew she was the norm, the one to envy, and the one every guy desired. And Liam Carter? He was meant to be hers. Sophia had expected Emily to do what girls like her always did: laugh it off, keep it cool, and pretend that nothing could possibly hurt her. But she should've known better. Because Emily was not the type to simply get even. She wanted to win. Sophia, for whatever reason, had now joined the game. Initially, it was subtle. Emily's eyes flickered with amusement whenever their paths crossed. She brushed past Sophia in the hallway, just a little too close, so their shoulders touched. Sophia's friends made casual, offhand comments that were just loud enough for her to hear but not loud enough for her to react without looking ridiculous. "I mean, it's sort of cute, right? What about the whole 'Juliet' thing? But let's be honest: Liam deserves better. Sophia initially ignored it. She wouldn't let Emily get under her skin. However, Emily went on to say more. The cafeteria was the center of East Haven High's social hierarchy. It was more than just a dining establishment; it was a showcase of power. Every table, seat, and casual grouping of students revealed a lot about the school's unspoken rules. The jocks dominated the far right section, sprawled across two long tables, their laughter audible and unfiltered. The student government kids sat near the windows, their conversations always centered on strategy and politics. The musicians and theater kids congregated near the entrance, forming a lively cluster of inside jokes and dramatic hand gestures. Finally, there was Liam Carter's table. The table. Right in the center, with the best vantage point to see everything and everyone. The Elite Throne. Sophia never looked at it. Not really. Today, however, was different. The usual buzz of cafeteria conversation had begun to shift. It began quietly, with a few whispers and a couple of turned heads. Then, like a ripple in still water, it expanded. Suddenly, all eyes were on Emily Sinclair. She stood at Liam's table, perfectly poised and composed, the embodiment of effortless confidence. The whole cafeteria held its breath. Sophia watched Emily place a delicate hand on the edge of Liam's table, her nails gently tapping against the polished wood. Her head tilted slightly, blonde hair falling over one shoulder, and her lips curled into a knowing smirk. Liam, as always, appeared completely unconcerned. He leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, and observed her with that familiar, lazy amusement. His blue eyes were sharp and assessing, but they lacked urgency. He was not flustered. He was not surprised. Because Liam Carter never got caught off guard. Sophia couldn't hear what Emily said at first, but then she laughed. Loud enough to carry. Loud enough to get people's attention. And then she did it. She reached out, placed a hand on Liam's chest, and leaned in slightly, blurring the line between casual and intimate. The cafeteria went completely silent. Because this was more than just Emily flirting with her ex. This was to remind everyone that she still had the cards. That Liam Carter belonged to her. And Liam? He let her. For a moment. Sophia's stomach twisted uncomfortably for an extended period of time. Then he smirked. Said something low that only Emily could hear. And whatever was it? Her expression faltered. Just for a second. But Sophia caught it. Then Liam leaned back and effortlessly removed Emily's hand from his chest. And that? That was when the tide shifted. Emily expected him to play along. To indulge her and give her something to work with. Instead, Liam Carter had done what he always did: refused to be predictable. Emily quickly recovered, tossing her hair over her shoulder and smiling. But Sophia saw through it. Because Emily Sinclair did not lose. Not unless she had a contingency plan. And that? That was what concerned her. Sophia should've left. Should have ignored everything, walked away, and focused on anything else. But, instead? She stayed. Long enough to notice Emily turn. To see her gaze focus on Sophia. She just knew. It wasn't just about Liam anymore. Emily wasn't simply trying to reclaim her place. She was heading for Sophia. Sophia was not at all surprised when Emily approached her table. She was already exhausted. Emily smiled. The kind of smile that showed only teeth and no warmth. "Hey, Sophia." Sophia blinked. "Um. Hi?" Emily tilted her head. "I just wanted to say, you did… cute yesterday." Sophia frowned. "Cute?" Emily smiled wider. "Yeah, during rehearsal. The entire Juliet thing. Although Liam has more experience, you made an effort. Ah. There it was. Sophia had to resist the urge to laugh. Because, wow, Emily was not subtle. Noah, meanwhile, was only ten seconds away from throwing his drink at her. What about Sophia? She simply smiled. "Thanks, Emily," she replied smoothly. "You must be so proud, getting dumped and still trying to act like you're the main character." Noah choked. Emily's eyes flashed. But before she could respond, someone else spoke. "You two bonding?" Liam. Of course. Sophia could barely resist the urge to groan. Because this was precisely what Emily desired. Turn this into a spectacle. And Liam? Liam Carter never backed out of a show. His gaze shifted between them, his smirk lazy. "Didn't know you two were friends." Emily recovered rapidly. "We're not." Sophia raised her eyebrow. "She's just giving me acting tips." Liam chuckled. "Right. Emily Sinclair knows how to fake an emotion. Emily's smile tightened. "Liam," she replied sweetly. "Are you trying to say something?" He grinned. "I think I already did." Nobody moved for a second. Emily exhaled through her nose before turning away. "See you around, Sophia," she added. Sophia recognized the threat lurking beneath it. She watched Emily walk away, back straight, already plotting her next move. When she returned her gaze to Liam, she discovered that he was still watching her. As if he was trying to figure something out. Like he hadn't expected her to fight back. Sophia rolled her eyes. "Stop looking at me like that." Liam smirked. "Like what?" "Like I just did something interesting." He chuckled. "Okay, Bennett. Perhaps you did. And just like that, the war continued. What about now? Emily Sinclair was now part of it. Sophia had a feeling it was only the beginning.
