The next morning, I woke up before the city did. At least it felt that way. The streets weren't empty, but they weren't crowded yet. A few cars rolled through intersections. A delivery truck stopped half a block away. Somewhere nearby, a bird chirped loud enough to be annoying. I sat up slowly and stretched my aching back. Sleeping on a concrete bench never got easier. It didn't matter how exhausted I was. It didn't matter how many nights I spent there. My body always reminded me exactly where I was when morning came.
