Chapter 2

After taking the stage, Melissa asked him with a flushed face, "Mr. Jenkins, what are your thoughts on this incident?" The man replied in a deep voice, "I know better than anyone how dangerous and unique this profession is. But no matter what happens, we can't think like regular folks. We can't distribute our focus on getting compensation and blaming anyone. This goes against what we rescuers stand for!" 'Ashley, you can go rescue without worry. I am your strongest shield behind.' The solid promise just flashed inside. Things had changed so much. "Am I the only one who thinks Mr. Jenkins and Melissa look good together?" Someone whispered in the crowd. "Shh, didn't you see Ashley is here too? Instead of hiding away after becoming disabled, she comes here to embarrass herself…" I lowered my gaze to my faulty legs, and thought to myself, 'They are right anyway.' But why did it hurt so much inside? I exerted all my strength to repeat the actions I had done countless times these days. But no matter how much I pinched, my legs remained completely numb. Brian was being eloquent on that stage, and he was still the dazzling and youngest dispatch director. Only the person standing next to him had changed to a starry-eyed girl, Melissa. With such a girl's admiration, Brian's lips were always curved in a smile. In a daze, the meeting against me was already over. Brian and Melissa chatted and laughed, pushing me along to the office. As soon as the door opened, my heart skipped a beat. Only half a month without seeing each other, and the office, which was usually so cold, somehow felt a bit livelier. On the black leather sofa, there were scattered figurines made from selfies of the team members. And the only ones neatly arranged were the two tightly nestled together in the middle. That was Brian and Melissa. I bit my lip. Carefully identifying the faces of all the figurines, I noticed mine was missing. The funniest part was that on the wall right across from the desk, the wedding photo of me and Brian was gone. Instead, there was a group photo of all the rescue team members, and I wasn't in it. Melissa was the one standing in the center in that picture. She stood there closely next to Brian. Those smiles on their faces were so ironic. Noticing me staring at the group picture, Brian went stiff, and he abruptly turned my wheelchair around. "Ashley, this was taken during the interview that day…" My eyes were dry, yet I remained motionless, looking at him. I really wanted to see what excuse he could come up with. But the next moment, Melissa knelt in front of my wheelchair, her eyes reddened with tears, shaking my unresponsive legs vigorously. "Ashley, I'm so sorry. I wish it had been me who got paralyzed that day instead. "You're way more professional than me. I don't think myself qualified enough to take over from you so soon!" 'Take over from me?' My face turned pale all of a sudden. What she talked about reminded me of the picture that happened days back. In fact, she wasn't even on the list for the mission that day! It was Brian who just shoved her onto the helicopter without further asking or agreement. "Ashley, though Melissa's a newbie here. She is brave enough to participate in practical training. Otherwise, when will she be able to take over?" I looked down at the ground, feeling helpless as I agreed. As a result, when I put on the safety gear and jumped down, she asked me over the intercom, "Ashley, why can't I take over from you right now?" I hadn't even processed what she meant when the safety rope suddenly snapped. I fell. I couldn't even know what happened later after my whole lower body went numb… "Ashley. Do you know?" She spoke with surging tears lingering in her eyes. But I could only feel the coldness inside her. "I chose this major specifically because you saved my life. I want to repay you, to become someone like you. But I never thought my first mission would end up hurting you! "Why wasn't it me who got into such an accident? Why wasn't it me who was paralyzed!" I didn't play alone with her act but responded in a cold and indifferent tone, "The window is right there. Open it and jump. That will count as compensation if you're so guilty. Melissa, do you dare to?"
