Monday
A FEW MILES DOWN the road Jake pulled up in front of a parts store. It had been an outlet for one of the three largest chains of parts stores, and looked promising. “This is a stand-alone store,” Jake said, “so I think I’ll circle around back and have a look.”
“Good idea,” Josh said. “The closest buildings are a service station and an old rundown café, and I don’t see any signs of life around either one of them.”
Jake pulled the van around behind the store and stopped by a small loading dock. “The terrain behind the store is very nearly vertical. Is it safe to assume there won’t be any danger coming from that direction?”
“More or less. If there’s an organized group around here, that would be a good place for a lookout, but we’ll rely on Rex’s senses.”
