Mateo’s sister walked out quietly, even before Kane had a chance to call her. Her head was held high but I could see her trembling slightly as she walked.
Kane’s first question cut deep, even for him, “have you ever made any statements to Logan that would give him the impression that you were interested in him?”
A sharp intake of air but her voice was steady when she replied, “no.”
“Were there times when you hung out with him alone without any other person present?”
A long moment passed where she just looked at him, but finally she said, “yes, when we were children.”
A triumphant look came over Kane’s face, just like a cat that finally caught the string, “so you were friends.”
