Episode 3 (Scen 5, 6)

SCENE 5 - MR MASON’S OFFER 

The lights goes up, and Mrs Raffery sits down in front of Mr Mason. 

MR MASON 

You probably wonder why I called you here. I have an offer that I think you would find interesting. 

MRS RAFFERY 

Could you please explain how you arrived at that conclusion? Your offer will probably not interest me. 

 MR MASON

 It is possible that you will change your mind. When I tell you what my offer is. 

MRS RAFFERY 

So tell me what you think. 

MR MASON 

You are surely aware that you have been imprisoned for a very long time that cannot be overturned.  

MRS RAFFERY 

My ears are open. 

MR MASON 

I can solve that problem. If you agree to participate in a scientific experiment. The purpose of the scientific experiment is to find a treatment for psychotic disorders.  

MRS RAFFERY 

The offer seems almost too good to be true. What will the experiment involve? 

MR MASON 

All you need to know is that you are going to try a treatment for psychotic disorders.

 MRS RAFFERY 

Mr Mason, how do I know that you will keep your word? 

MR MASON 

Your distrust of me is understandable. But you will only receive this offer once. You will presumably be forced to sit here all your life if you choose not to take this offer. As a bouns will you be excused from  from your daily chores.  

MRS RAFFERY 

According to my understanding, would you be willing to let me be a guinea pig for a reappraisal of my case? I am not satisfied with that. Fortunately, I can offer you a better idea. My suggestion is that you reappraise my case or give me a penalty discount. Then and only then will I be a participant in your experiment. 

MR MASON 

Negotiation is not an option for you. You may accept the offer as it is or decline it.  

Raffery sits in silence for a while.  

MR MASON It 

It is time for you to give me an answer.

MRS RAFFERY

Your offer is accepted. 

Ms Raffery returned Mr Mason's handshake steadily after he extended his.   

MR MASON 

Then we have an agreement. 

 Miss Miller meets Mrs Raffery on the way out of Mr Mason's office. Without a word, they passed by each other. As Miss Miller approaches Mr Mason, she places herself in front of him. 

MR MASON 

We have discussed how to deal with your melancholy for a long time. I think there is a new medicine that can help you. The only thing I need is your approval. 

MISS MILLER 

To get better, I would do anything. I hope you are already aware of that. 

MR MASON 

There appears to be an agreement here.  

MISS MILLER 

You know where I stand on this issue. You have my approval. 

MR MASON 

Until we meet again, take good care of yourself. 

Miss Miller rises. She nods to Mr Mason and leaves the room. The lights are turned off.  

SCENE 6 - MRS POWELL'S VISIT 

Mr Powell's wife stands on the other side of his prisoncell. She reaches out to grab his hand. 

MRS POWELL

 I will get you out of here. 

MR POWELL 

Could you please tell me what you can do? Can you go back in time and prevent me from killing my best friend? 

MRS POWELL 

As you know, I cannot do that. 

MR POWELL 

In that case, you cannot do anything. You and I both know I will sit here and rot. 

MRS POWELL 

That is not going to happen. 

MR POWELL

How can you guarantee it? I am the one who is stuck here. 

MRS POWELL 

You do not think my family, our children and I suffer because you are stuck here. 

MR POWELL 

Please accept my apologies. But this life drives me insane. 

MRS POWELL 

I love you and miss you very much.

MR POWELL 

I love you, as you know. Nevertheless, this life takes a toll on me. 

MRS POWELL 

I promise to talk with our lawyer. I will ask him to transfer you to another prison. 

MR POWELL 

I know your intentions are good. However, what difference will it make if I move?  

MRS POWELL

If you are in a lower safety class prison, there is a better chance that you will be released.  Please behave now and follow all rules.  

MR POWELL 

You can count on me to behave. My only wish is to return home again. 

MRS POWELL 

I also wish for you to return to your home. Your children and I need you to be strong right now. 

MR POWELL 

How are our children doing?

 MRS POWELL 

Alex has asked for you. He wonders when you will return home. Clara is most of quiet and ...  

MR POWELL 

How are you doing? 

MRS POWELL 

I miss you. I feel so empty without you. 

MR POWELL 

If I come out of here will I take you to our favourite place. Then we will have a lovely picnic. 

MRS POWELL

I am looking forward to that. 

MR POWELL 

I know none of this was your dream. I was supposed to be there for you and the children.  

MRS POWELL 

You cannot lose hope. Patience is what you need most right now.  

MR POWELL 

There is nothing more worthwhile than fighting for my family. 

MRS POWELL 

There is no doubt that you will be able to handle this. You are a trained soldier. You will survive this. 

MR POWELL 

I wish I could hold you and kiss you farewell. But  I guess I need to seattle for kissing your hand instead. 

Mr Powell gives Mrs Powell a quick kiss on her hand. Mrs Powell smiles at Mr Powell.  

MRS POWELL 

I will return as soon as possible. But before that take care of yourself and follow the rules. 

MR POWELL 

Make sure Clara gets this. 

Mr Powell takes off his necklace. Then he goes and retrieves a letter, which he gives to Mrs Powell. 

MR POWELL 

This letter is for Alex. Tell them I love them. 

MRS POWELL 

I will make sure they receive your gifts and your greeting. I promise to return soon.  

Mr Powell continues to look at Mrs Powell until she leaves the stage. Lights are turned off.
