*CHAPTER 2: The Transfer *

420 Words
The transfer letter didn’t ask me. “Mom got a new job,” she said over breakfast. “We’re moving. You start at St. Vale Academy tomorrow.” Just like that. No warning. No choice. New city. New uniform. New school. I hated it already. St. Vale Academy looked like it cost more than our old house. Glass doors. Perfect lawns. Kids who already had groups and inside jokes. I was late. First day, already messing up. I rushed through the hallway with my transfer papers in one hand and my bag slipping off my shoulder. The teacher was already talking when I walked in. “Ah, Logan Hayes. We’ve been expecting you.” She smiled too wide. “Sit… right here.” She pointed to the only empty seat. By the window. Beside her. And the moment I saw her, I forgot how to breathe. Fair skin. Like milk in sunlight. Black hair that fell straight past her shoulders. Black eyes that looked straight through me. She wasn’t wearing black. She didn’t need to. She looked like night anyway. She glanced up when I sat down. For half a second, her eyes widened. “Ah—ah,” she breathed. Soft. Like she knew me. Then her face went blank again. Quiet. Cold. She looked back at her notebook and didn’t say a word. “Class,” the teacher said, “This is Onyx Carter. And beside her is Logan Hayes. Onyx, please help him settle in.” Onyx. Onyx Carter. That name hit me like a brick. Because five minutes. Five minutes when I was 9 years old. Lost in a hospital hallway. Crying. A girl with milk skin and black eyes took my hand and said, “My name is Onyx. If you’re scared, just say my name. Okay?” That was it. Five minutes. Then a nurse came and pulled her away. I never saw her again. I told myself I made her up. But here she was. Right beside me. And she was pretending she didn’t remember. I turned to her. “Um… Onyx?” Nothing. She didn’t look up. Her pen kept moving across the page. The teacher clapped her hands. “Alright, settle down everyone.” But I couldn’t settle. Because the girl who saved me when I was small was sitting next to me. And she was acting like I was a stranger. Why? _Tap ♡ Follow so you don’t miss Chapter 3 — Why is Onyx pretending not to know Logan?
