CHAPTER SEVENTEEN The next five days were enough to make even the most professional rider saddle sore. Starting at sunrise, they rode until sunset with just a brief break for a hurried cold lunch. That meant endless hours on the back of a horse. They had made very good time the first two days, but then the going started getting rougher. The scenery was becoming more spectacular. Towering mountain walls that contained various shades of red, copper, and beige sparkled in the sunlight while, off the narrow trails, thousand-foot drops into unchartered canyons awaited any horse and rider who made a mistake.
