CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE Rain continued to pour from the leaden skies as the thunderheads rode the crest of the Sierra Madre. The creek became a wild, surging stream and the arroyos were overflowing. The animals had been moved to the top of the steps that lead to the treasure house. They worked by the light of the ancient tapers to conserve what little life was left in their torches as, with aching legs, they carried bars of gold from the levels below.
