CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT Hours passed as Maria drifted in and out of consciousness. Eventually, a faint gleam of light caught her eye. It seemed very, very far away. The fragmented rays showed her something that looked different from the rocks and stones that had come from above and she crawled toward it. Her fingers touched a webbed strap and she realized that this was Cory's backpack. With the strap wrapped around one arm and the Medallion clutched in the other hand, she started crawling toward the faraway light source. The going was rough. She snapped what was left of her fingernails, and her fingertips were bloodied from the sharp rocks and pieces of timbers. The closer she came to the light, a roaring sound became louder and louder.
