CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE With Flynn leading the pack mules, Maria and Jesus rested their horses on the bank of a roaring stream. Flynn had to yell at the top of his lungs to be heard over the crashing of the water. "We're going to have to go for it. We have no choice. Otherwise, it might take us a day or two of hard riding upstream to find a better place." Flynn pointed to where Maria should make her run, and then indicated to a frightened Jesus to travel on the far side of Maria; Flynn would take the mules and heads upstream, where he would enter. Flynn and Maria hit the swirling waters. It took all of their horsemanship to stay in the saddle. With frightened eyes, Jesus watched them go, then sank his spurs into his horse's flanks and took the plunge. He was no match for the river. Terro
